Nine people have died after a private jet plunged into a residential neighbourhood in South Florida and exploded in a massive fireball near a busy roadway, authorities have confirmed.

The Learjet 60 crashed at about 12:50 p.m. on Sunday in Greenacres, Palm Beach County, after departing Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas. The aircraft was heading to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people aboard the aircraft were killed, describing the incident as a horrific tragedy. The identities of the victims had not been released as of the latest reports.

Witness videos captured the aircraft plunging rapidly from the sky before striking near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North. The impact produced a huge fireball, scattered debris across the roadway and left a large crater, while thick black smoke rose above the neighbourhood.

The aircraft reportedly came down close to homes and passing vehicles, narrowly avoiding what could have been an even greater disaster. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who visited the area, described the incident as a “cataclysmic plane crash”. He said there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries among people on the ground.

The circumstances preceding the crash are also drawing attention. Air traffic control recordings indicate that the pilots reported icing, precipitation and significant turbulence while the aircraft was cruising at about 35,000 feet. They requested permission to climb to a higher altitude before the jet began a rapid descent.

In distress communications, a pilot reported that the aircraft was descending at increasingly alarming rates and declared an emergency. One of the final radio messages included the words: “We’re going to crash into the ground.” Flight-tracking information and radio recordings indicate that the aircraft’s descent accelerated dramatically before impact.

Authorities have not established what caused the crash. Aviation experts have suggested that icing and turbulence could be among the factors investigators examine, but the possibility that other mechanical, operational or weather-related issues contributed has not been ruled out.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident. The NTSB said investigators were expected at the crash site on Sunday and Monday, with a media briefing scheduled in West Palm Beach.

The crash also prompted emergency measures in the surrounding community. Authorities closed Military Trail in both directions and began evacuating approximately 600 residents from a nearby mobile-home community as emergency teams secured the area. Motorists were advised to avoid the affected roads.

Aircraft manufacturer Bombardier, which produces the Learjet family, expressed condolences and said it would cooperate with investigators. The investigation is expected to examine the aircraft’s flight data, weather conditions, maintenance history and the pilots’ response to the reported difficulties.

The identities of those killed and the final cause of the crash remain unknown as investigators work to establish what happened in the aircraft’s final minutes.
