Fire at Mississippi Care Home Leaves Two Dead, Dozens Rescued
Two people have died after a fire tore through a senior living centre in Clinton, Mississippi, destroying large sections of the facility and forcing the evacuation of more than 100 residents.
Clinton Mayor Will Purdie confirmed the deaths on Thursday, October 22, saying two residents lost their lives in the blaze that engulfed Brookdale Clinton the previous evening.
The fire broke out at approximately 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, with flames spreading across multiple wings of the facility, which provides independent living, assisted living and memory care services for older people.
Fire Chief Levius Buckley said staff managed to evacuate about 85 residents safely, while firefighters helped another 10 to 15 people escape. At least four people were taken to hospital, according to officials.
Emergency crews worked through the night to search the site and account for everyone who had been inside when the fire started. Authorities said much of the building had been destroyed, while sections that remained standing were considered uninhabitable for the time being.
The blaze was brought under control after approximately three hours, but firefighters remained at the scene into the early hours of Thursday as officials continued assessing the damage.
Residents who escaped the fire were taken to a nearby church, where relatives and other loved ones gathered to await news. Some survivors were later accommodated by family members, while others were transferred to alternative facilities operated by Brookdale.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves expressed concern for the affected residents, their families and staff, while state emergency agencies and multiple fire departments assisted with the response.
Authorities said the facility’s sprinkler system was operating when the fire occurred. However, the cause of the blaze remains under investigation, and officials have not announced what triggered it.
The tragedy has highlighted the challenges involved in evacuating older residents, many of whom have limited mobility and require assistance during emergencies. Local officials praised the care facility’s staff, firefighters and community members for helping residents reach safety.
Brookdale Senior Living, which operates the centre, said its staff were heartbroken by the deaths and that supporting affected residents, families and employees remained a priority.
The company operates more than 500 senior living communities across the United States. Authorities have yet to release further details about the two people who died as investigations continue.
