A major fire has broken out at a Canadian military base in Alberta, leaving several people dead and others injured after a serious incident in the facility’s training area.

Canada’s Defence Minister, David McGuinty, confirmed the fatalities and injuries at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Saturday, October 17, but did not disclose the number of casualties as authorities continued working to identify victims and notify their families.

The fire began at approximately 4 p.m. local time in the base’s training area before spreading rapidly beyond its boundaries into the surrounding rural district. Military personnel and civilian emergency crews were deployed to contain the blaze and assist those affected.

Strong winds, with gusts reported to have reached around 100 kilometres per hour in parts of Alberta, complicated firefighting efforts and contributed to concerns about the spread of the flames.

The scale of the emergency placed considerable pressure on nearby medical facilities. Hospitals in the Edmonton area activated “Code Orange” emergency procedures, which are used when a large number of casualties require coordinated treatment. Injured people were transported to hospitals across the region, with some moved by air.

A doctor at Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital described the influx of patients as exceptionally large, telling the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that the number of people requiring care was overwhelming.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canadian Armed Forces are investigating the incident. Authorities have not publicly established what caused the fire, and officials have urged caution while the investigation remains active.

The Canadian military said its immediate priorities were supporting affected personnel and their families, assisting emergency responders and establishing the full extent of the incident. It also said casualty details would not be released until next of kin had been notified.

By late Saturday, local authorities reported that the fire was being held and that property and critical infrastructure were protected. No evacuation order had been issued for nearby residents at that point.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed sympathy for those affected and said the federal government was working with Alberta’s provincial government and local authorities. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also described the incident as tragic, while neighbouring Saskatchewan offered assistance.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is one of the country’s major army training facilities. Located near the town of Wainwright, about 210 kilometres east of Edmonton, it hosts exercises designed to prepare soldiers for operational deployments.

The incident has raised urgent questions about what happened in the training area and how the fire developed. Officials have not confirmed a cause, and further information is expected as investigators establish the sequence of events and notify the families of those killed or injured.
