President Bola Tinubu has granted presidential assent to the law upgrading the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, to the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna.

The member representing Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency, Daniel Amos, has commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, for sponsoring the bill and ensuring its successful passage.

Amos, who chairs the House Committee on House Services, described the development as a landmark achievement that would strengthen technical education, expand opportunities for higher learning and promote skills development in Kaduna State and beyond.

In a statement on Friday, he praised Abbas for prioritising the legislation despite the demanding responsibilities of presiding over the House of Representatives.

“Speaker Tajudeen’s leadership on this bill demonstrates purposeful commitment to education and national development,” Amos said.

He noted that the legislation would reposition the institution to provide specialised education in technology and vocational studies, strengthen research capacity and equip graduates with skills relevant to the country’s development needs.

Amos also thanked Tinubu for signing the bill into law, alongside the legislation establishing the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos.

Both bills were sponsored by Abbas and are expected to broaden access to specialised university education and strengthen Nigeria’s technical and vocational education system.

According to Amos, the presidential assent demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to educational reform and human capital development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He congratulated the people of Kaduna State, as well as the management, staff and students of the former Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, on the institution’s elevation.

The law repeals the existing legal framework for the polytechnic and establishes a new foundation for its operation as a federal university specialising in technology and vocational studies.

Amos expressed optimism that the transformation would facilitate the expansion of academic programmes, improve research and innovation, attract federal funding and enhance graduates’ employability.

He assured stakeholders that the House of Representatives would continue to support initiatives aimed at ensuring the effective take-off of the university and advancing technical education across the country.
