The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has asserted that the recent defections of state governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are part of a broader conspiracy to establish a one-party state in Nigeria. In a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC highlighted that the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States have abandoned their constituents to align with the APC, which the party accuses of exacerbating poverty and instability across the nation.

“The recent defections by the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) validates the African Democratic Congress (ADC)’s long-standing warning that President Bola Tinubu is determined to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, no matter the cost to democracy or national stability,” Abdullahi stated. He emphasized that these governors have betrayed their people by joining a party that has failed to address critical issues such as insecurity, economic management, healthcare, social welfare, and corruption.

The ADC insisted that the opposition remains undeterred by what it termed “political apostasy,” arguing that the 2027 elections will ultimately pit the Nigerian people against the APC. “While the ruling party continues to celebrate the defection of these governors, the ADC and the opposition coalition are equally delighted that the line has been made even clearer between those who are committed to saving the country and those who merely want to join the gravy train,” Abdullahi said. He added that Nigerians endure daily hardships, including rising food prices, unemployment, and widespread insecurity, which he attributed to the APC’s failures.

The party concluded that the defections reflect cowardice and selfish motives rather than genuine political conviction, and it urged citizens to recognize the stakes in the upcoming electoral battle. “The people can see, and they are waiting. 2027 will be a clear battle between the people of Nigeria and President Tinubu and his gang of governors in the APC,” the statement read.
