British actress Emaa Hussen has been charged in Australia over allegations that she attempted to import 320 kilograms of methamphetamine into the country, in what authorities describe as a major international drug trafficking case.

Hussen, 34, appeared before a Sydney court after being arrested by the Australian Federal Police. Prosecutors allege that the methamphetamine, valued at approximately A$296 million (about £157 million), was concealed inside bags of charcoal shipped from Ghana to Australia.

According to investigators, Australian Border Force officers detected suspicious material while examining shipping containers that arrived at Sydney’s Port Botany. Authorities subsequently removed the alleged drugs and launched a controlled operation to identify those connected to the shipment.

Police allege that Hussen supervised the unloading of the shipment at a storage facility in Sydney before being arrested at a residence in the city’s western suburbs. Two other suspects have also been charged in connection with the investigation.

The actress, who appeared as Naz in the E20 web series linked to the BBC soap EastEnders, has been denied bail and is expected to return to court in August. Australian authorities say she faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if convicted.

The Australian Federal Police described the seizure as a significant blow against organized crime, estimating that the quantity of methamphetamine involved could have resulted in millions of street-level drug transactions.

Hussen has not entered a plea, and under Australian law, she remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
