Two Arrested for Self-Kidnap and Ransom Request in Akoko Edo
The Edo State Police Command has arrested two men for allegedly staging their own kidnapping to extort ₦4 million from family members in Igarra, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.
The suspects, Lucky Alabi, 48, and Taiye Enahoro, 37, both from the Uneme Akpama Community, were apprehended on June 26 by operatives of the Igarra Police Division.
The plot was hatched on June 23, when Enahoro reportedly called Alabi’s relatives, falsely claiming Alabi had been abducted and demanding a ₦4 million ransom for his release.
Police uncovered the deception through intelligence and digital tracking before any payment was made.
Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikedem, confirmed that both suspects have confessed to their roles in the staged kidnapping. “The suspects have confessed to their respective roles in the staged kidnapping and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation,” the statement said.
Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, issued a stern warning against criminal deception. “Members of the public are warned against engaging in any form of criminal deception, including staging kidnappings to extort money from unsuspecting relatives,” he stated.
The police command reiterated its commitment to bringing all perpetrators of criminal acts to justice.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
