Dotun Oladipo: IPI Nigeria Mourns ‘Committed Press Freedom Warrior’

The Nigerian chapter of the International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran journalist, publisher and press freedom advocate, Dotun Oladipo.

Oladipo, who was 56, died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos. His death was confirmed in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26.

In a statement signed by its President, Musikilu Mojeed, IPI Nigeria described Oladipo as an accomplished journalist and a committed defender of press freedom who made significant contributions to Nigeria’s media industry.

The organisation said Oladipo was highly dependable, resourceful, professional and amiable, qualities that earned him the respect of colleagues and associates across the media industry.

According to IPI Nigeria, his dedication to the profession led to his appointment as Chairman of its Programmes Committee in 2024, a responsibility he carried out with enthusiasm and diligence.

The institute said Oladipo remained actively involved in its activities despite the demands of running The Eagle Online, the digital newspaper he founded and published.

It noted that he played a key role in the success of IPI Nigeria’s 2025 Annual General Meeting and Conference and served as an important member of the 2026 AGM and Conference Planning Committee.

IPI Nigeria recalled that earlier in August, Oladipo travelled from Lagos to Abeokuta to represent the institute at an important event, despite having another previously scheduled engagement in Lagos on the same day.

The institute described the gesture as another demonstration of his commitment to journalism and the organisation.

Oladipo’s career spanned several prominent Nigerian media organisations, including Newswatch, The Punch, The Compass, Nigerian Tribune and The Sun, before he established The Eagle Online about 15 years ago.

IPI Nigeria said his death had created a significant void in the Nigerian media community, particularly in the fight for press freedom and the promotion of professional journalism.

“IPI Nigeria has lost a dependable colleague, a passionate advocate and a trusted friend,” the institute said.

The organisation extended its condolences to Oladipo’s family, friends, colleagues and the entire staff of The Eagle Online, praying for strength for them to cope with the loss.

Oladipo is survived by his family and leaves behind a legacy built on journalism, media entrepreneurship and advocacy for press freedom.
