Embrace Chinese Language for Jobs, Trade and Global Success, Nigeria, China, Journalists Urge Citizens
The Chinese government, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists have jointly called on Nigerians to learn the Chinese language, describing it as a powerful tool for accessing employment, expanding trade, and tapping into global opportunities. The appeal came during the International Chinese Language Day celebration held in Abuja on Monday.

Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy and Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, told the gathering that the Chinese language serves as a vital link between people, cultures, and economies worldwide. He called the language a “genetic link” carrying more than five millennia of Chinese civilization and a shared human heritage. He added, “Learning Chinese is undoubtedly an important shortcut to fully understanding China and realizing one’s dreams through cooperation in various sectors.” Yang also noted that Chinese is both a “gift across time” and a “golden bridge” for mutual understanding.
Yang further revealed that Chinese language education now exists in over 190 countries and regions, with more than 200 million people learning it globally. He pointed out that core Chinese philosophical ideas, such as “the world belongs to all” and “do not do to others what you would not have them do to you,” closely align with Nigerian values of community and harmony.
Representing the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, the Director of News, Suleiman Musa, described Chinese as one of humanity’s greatest cultural treasures. He stressed that language is increasingly critical in diplomacy, trade, media, and global communication. Musa disclosed that the “Ni Hao China” programme emerged from agreements made during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to China in September 2024, aimed at deepening trade, tourism, and bilateral ties.

Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, emphasized the role of language in building unity and cross-cultural understanding. She said the event highlights the strong Nigeria-China relationship founded on shared progress and innovation. “This event underscores the power of language as a bridge for cultures, fostering deeper understanding between Nigeria and China, two great nations bound by shared aspirations,” Ike stated.
