FAAN to Shut Owerri Airport Runway for 25 Days From October 20
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, for about 25 days to allow for essential repairs and resurfacing.
The closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation, as the authority moves to address runway deterioration ahead of the expected increase in air traffic during the Christmas season.
FAAN said sections of the runway had developed potholes and extensive surface cracks, with recent heavy rainfall worsening the damage.
According to the authority, the rehabilitation will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.
The project will also include a runway extension designed to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as passenger traffic to the region increases.
FAAN said the expansion was expected to improve passenger comfort and support a more seamless travel experience.
The authority advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.
It added that consultations with relevant stakeholders would continue, with confirmed closure and reopening dates to be communicated once finalised.
FAAN apologised for the inconvenience the temporary closure might cause, stressing that the intervention was part of its commitment to maintaining safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
