Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co Ltd has announced a recall of more than 440,000 Odyssey minivans in the United States due to a defect that could cause airbags to deploy unexpectedly.

The recall, affecting 440,830 vehicles, was disclosed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which cited a software programming error as the cause of the issue.

According to the regulator, the fault may trigger unintended deployment of the side and side-curtain airbags, posing a potential safety risk to occupants.

Honda said authorised dealers will fix the problem by reprogramming the affected vehicles’ software at no cost to owners.

The development adds to ongoing safety oversight in the auto industry, where manufacturers are under pressure to swiftly address defects that could endanger drivers and passengers.
