Mutfwang Orders Security Agencies to Crush Emerging Threats as Plateau Battles Renewed Attacks

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has ordered security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering, strengthen inter-agency collaboration and adopt proactive measures to prevent further attacks across the state.

Mutfwang gave the directive on Wednesday, September 2, when he convened a meeting of the Plateau State Security Council at the New Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos, amid renewed security concerns in parts of the state.

The meeting brought together the Deputy Governor, heads of security and law enforcement agencies, the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da. Jacob Gyang Buba, and other senior government officials.

The council reviewed emerging security threats, recent attacks in some communities, intelligence gathering and sharing, preventive operations and inter-agency coordination, with particular emphasis on protecting lives, property and economic activities.

Speaking after the meeting, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, said the meeting was part of the governor’s periodic assessment of the security situation and efforts to identify gaps and strengthen existing security measures.

Faniyan described recent attacks in Mangu as unfortunate, noting that security personnel had been deployed but the incident nevertheless occurred.

He said the development was one of the reasons the governor summoned the council, stressing that security agencies must work to prevent a recurrence.

The Commissioner also disclosed that arrests had been made in connection with some of the major attacks recorded in the state over the past month, while investigations were continuing to identify other suspects and determine their roles.

According to him, the investigations involve collaboration among security agencies at both state and national levels, with technological tools also being deployed to analyse intelligence.

“We have some arrests; investigation is ongoing. We are not investigating in isolation. We are collaborating with all the other agencies up to the national level,” Faniyan said.

He assured residents that security agencies had received the governor’s directives and would intensify efforts to protect lives and property, respond swiftly to threats and strengthen intelligence-led operations.

Faniyan also appealed to residents to provide credible and timely information about suspicious persons, movements and activities, stressing that effective security requires close cooperation between security agencies and communities.

He said the focus was shifting from merely responding to attacks after they occur to strengthening preventive operations capable of identifying and neutralising threats before they materialise.

The Commissioner further warned that heightened vigilance would be particularly important as the ember months approach and political activities increase ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The state government said the meeting reflects the Mutfwang administration’s determination to consolidate peace and security as a foundation for investment, tourism, agriculture, commerce and sustainable economic development in Plateau State.
