NUJ FCT BY-ELECTION: GRACE IKE TASKS NEWLY ELECTED EXCO MEMBERS ON WELFARISM, INTEGRITY, ACCOUNTABILITY

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Comrade Grace Ike, has welcomed the newly elected executive members of the council, urging them to uphold the union’s values of unity, ethical journalism, transparency, and prioritizing journalists’ welfare.

The by-election, held on Saturday, filled three vacant positions left unoccupied after the main NUJ FCT elections on December 4, 2024. Sharon Emephia from the Correspondents Chapel was elected as Assistant Secretary with 52 votes and two spoiled ballots. Daniel Henry Abimiku of the Information Chapel was elected as Financial Secretary with 52 votes and two invalid ones. Rosemary Ukoko-Tega of Aso Radio/TV Chapel was voted in as Internal Auditor with 52 votes and one invalid.

The results were announced by the Chair of the election committee and chairperson of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Mrs. Bassey Ita Ikpang. The newly elected officers were sworn in by legal practitioner Barr. Ehidiamen Isibor and presented with their certificates of return.

Comrade Ike thanked members for turning out to vote and praised the electoral committee for running a transparent and credible election. “She also officially dissolved the committee, having completed its task,” she said.

The current NUJ FCT Executive Council members include Vice Chairman Comrade Ndambabo Yahaya, Secretary Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Treasurer Mrs. Sandra Udeike, and Ex-Officio Comrade Ebriku John Friday. Grace Ike, who emerged as the first female chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, emphasized unity, ethical journalism, and transparency as key values for the newly elected members to uphold.
