The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, under the leadership of Comrade Grace Ike, has achieved a significant milestone by facilitating free eye surgery for former Council Chairman, Comrade Ndamadu Sule, at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja. The surgery, conducted on August 28, 2025, ended seven years of visual impairment for Sule, greatly improving his quality of life.

Comrade Sule expressed deep gratitude, describing the gesture as “an act of compassion and true leadership”. “By December 22, it would be seven years since my struggle began. I thank them for spending resources to help me. I remain deeply grateful to the NUJ-FCT Council for their support,” Sule stated.

Sule praised Chairman Grace Ike, recalling she reached out before elections despite being strangers. “She called me before the elections. I didn’t know her, but I prayed for her as a female leader. God answered those prayers. Her work in healthcare speaks for itself. I am thankful she became Chairman and is fulfilling her duties with humanity”.

In line with Ike’s campaign promise prioritizing NUJ members’ welfare, two other journalists – Mr. Nicholas Ngozichukwu of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Mr. Kamoru Odunlami of ITV – are scheduled for free eye surgery at Nizamiye Hospital. Others screened received medications and follow-up care.

This initiative reflects the NUJ-FCT Council’s broader health agenda, partnering with Nizamiye Hospital for free medical interventions – a first in recent years. Beneficiaries commended the Council’s sustained support, underscoring renewed commitment to journalist welfare and a healthier media environment in Abuja.
