Nigeria Joins World Energy Council as Tinubu Hails Global Recognition

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s admission as the newest National Member Committee of the World Energy Council (WEC), describing the development as a landmark achievement that reinforces the country’s growing influence in global energy affairs and reflects confidence in its ongoing energy sector reforms.

In a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said joining the global organisation, which comprises more than 100 member countries, provides Nigeria with a stronger platform to contribute to international discussions on energy security, sustainability and equitable access to energy.

The President also congratulated the inaugural leadership of WEC Nigeria, led by Abdulrazaq Isa as Chairman and Bala Wunti as Chief Executive Officer, alongside members of the newly constituted board drawn from the energy industry, regulatory agencies, financial institutions, academia, industry associations and the Future Energy Leaders community.

Tinubu described Isa as a respected industrialist whose investments in indigenous refining and industrial energy have helped expand opportunities for Nigerian businesses, while commending Wunti for what he called more than three decades of distinguished service in the energy sector.

According to the President, Wunti’s leadership has been marked by reforms that improved national revenue generation and strengthened investor confidence in Nigeria’s energy industry.

He added that the composition of the WEC Nigeria board, bringing together experienced industry professionals, regulators, finance experts and young energy leaders, provides the diversity and credibility needed to advance the council’s objectives.

President Tinubu said Nigeria intends to play an active leadership role within the World Energy Council rather than merely participating in its activities.

“Nigeria has joined the World Energy Council to lead, not just participate – to ensure Africa’s voice shapes global energy decisions,” the President said.

Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting WEC Nigeria as a neutral platform for policy dialogue, innovation and investment mobilisation. He also pledged Nigeria’s continued collaboration with the World Energy Council’s headquarters in London and its global membership to promote secure, affordable and sustainable energy.

The President expressed confidence that the new leadership would strengthen Nigeria’s position in global energy governance and wished the chairman, chief executive officer and members of the inaugural board success in their responsibilities.

Nigeria’s admission into the World Energy Council is expected to deepen the country’s engagement with global energy stakeholders while providing new opportunities for collaboration on energy transition, investment, technology and sustainable development.
