Daily Times Honours NiMet DG Anosike for Climate Leadership
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has been recognised for his contributions to climate leadership and meteorological development with the Changemaker Climate Leadership Award at the DTN@100 Times Heroes Awards.
The award was presented on November 3, 2026, at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, as part of activities marking the 100th anniversary of The Daily Times of Nigeria.
The honour recognises Anosike’s efforts in strengthening meteorological services, driving institutional reforms and promoting the use of weather and climate information as tools for national development.
It also acknowledges the reforms initiated under his leadership to reposition NiMet as a technologically driven and service-oriented agency capable of delivering reliable weather and climate intelligence to support economic growth, protect lives and strengthen national resilience.
Since his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in December 2023, Anosike has pursued an institutional reform agenda focused on improving the agency’s scientific capacity, modernising operations and ensuring that meteorological information delivers practical benefits to Nigerians.
Under his leadership, NiMet has continued to strengthen the role of weather and climate intelligence in critical sectors of the economy, particularly aviation, agriculture, disaster risk management and climate adaptation.
His administration has also advanced the agency’s engagement in international discussions on climate resilience, early warning systems, sustainable investment and the application of scientific knowledge to development.
The recognition comes amid growing concerns over climate variability and its effects on livelihoods, infrastructure, food security and economic activities, reinforcing the importance of reliable meteorological institutions in national planning and disaster preparedness.
NiMet said the award underscored the value of strong meteorological institutions in improving public safety, supporting informed decision-making and building resilience against climate-related risks.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to providing timely, accurate and dependable weather and climate information, noting that its services extend beyond forecasting atmospheric conditions to delivering actionable intelligence that protects lives, supports livelihoods and contributes to sustainable national development.
