The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), in collaboration with operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has uncovered and sealed an illegal refinery allegedly operated by Chinese nationals in Ogere-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The discovery followed an intelligence-led operation that exposed a heavily fenced facility occupying more than three hectares of land, which investigators described as crude but technically sophisticated.

During a joint inspection, officials discovered underground tanks suspected to have been used for heating and processing sludge oil, refining waste and substances believed to be Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel.

The inspection team also identified underground storage facilities, locally fabricated tanks, silos and other equipment allegedly deployed in the processing and separation of petroleum products.

Speaking with journalists after the operation, the Ogun State Coordinator of NMDPRA, Dr Atilola Akinyemi, described the facility as an illegal operation, stressing that it had no approval or operating permit from any recognised regulatory authority.

Akinyemi disclosed that the underground storage facility behind the refinery had an estimated capacity of more than 90,000 litres and was equipped with underground heating systems and water hydrants designed for cooling operations.

He warned that the circulation of adulterated petroleum products from such facilities could pose serious dangers to vehicles and engines, potentially causing extensive mechanical damage.

According to him, all products recovered from the facility have been confiscated by the Federal Government, while the regulatory authority has sealed the premises to prevent further illegal activities.

Also speaking, the Director of the EFCC’s Department of Proceeds of Crime Management, Gbolahan Latona, called on Nigerians to demonstrate patriotism and support collective efforts to protect the country’s economic interests.

Latona said investigations into the activities at the facility would be concluded before the suspects are brought before a competent court for prosecution.

He added that proceeds recovered from criminal activities would be channelled towards meaningful use for national development.

The operation underscores ongoing efforts by regulatory and law enforcement agencies to clamp down on illegal petroleum processing, protect consumers and safeguard Nigeria’s oil and gas industry from economic sabotage.
