A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed January 27, 2027, for judgment in the terrorism financing trial of Tukur Mamu, who is accused of facilitating ransom payments to terrorists responsible for the 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train attack.

Justice Mohammed Umar scheduled the judgment date after lawyers to the Federal Government and Mamu adopted their final written addresses and presented closing arguments.

The prosecution was represented by David Kaswe, while Mamu was represented by his counsel, Johnson Usman, SAN.

Mamu was initially arraigned on a 10-count charge bordering on terrorism financing in connection with the March 2022 attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train.

He was arrested by Egyptian authorities in September 2022 at the Cairo International Airport before being brought back to Nigeria to face trial.

The Federal Government subsequently amended the charges, introducing additional allegations, including unlawful possession of firearms without a valid licence and money laundering.

The prosecution alleged that Mamu, who reportedly acted as a negotiator during efforts to secure the release of passengers abducted in the train attack, encouraged the terrorist group to reject the Chief of Defence Staff committee established by the government to negotiate with the kidnappers.

He was also accused of playing a central role in receiving and delivering ransom payments from families of the abducted passengers.

With both parties having presented their final arguments, the court will now deliver its judgment on January 27, 2027.

Mamu has yet to be convicted of the charges against him.
