Russia Accuses UNESCO, Global Bodies of Ignoring Killings of Russian Journalists

Russia has accused international organisations of applying double standards in addressing crimes against journalists, alleging that attacks on Russian media workers have been overlooked while perpetrators continue to enjoy impunity.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, made the allegation in a statement marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists on November 2.

Zakharova said the safety of journalists worldwide had continued to deteriorate since the United Nations General Assembly established the observance in 2013, warning that media professionals increasingly faced threats, intimidation and targeted attacks in conflict zones.

She cited UNESCO’s 1997 General Conference resolution and a 2023 Executive Board decision, insisting that the organisation’s leadership was required to condemn killings and physical attacks against journalists without discrimination.

Reaffirming Moscow’s position, the spokeswoman declared that there should be no statute of limitations for crimes against Russian journalists.

She said Russia would continue to press its demands within UNESCO and other international platforms, defend the professional rights of Russian journalists abroad and seek justice for those responsible for attacks against them.

The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists serves as a reminder of the need for accountability, independent investigations and stronger protection for media professionals, particularly in conflict and politically unstable environments.
