The Ogun State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Kan Steel Holdings Nigeria Limited in Sagamu following the death of a worker, Abdulfatai Nuru, in an operational accident.

The shutdown followed a safety inspection that reportedly identified potential breaches of workplace safety regulations, prompting authorities to issue a stop-work order against the company.

The Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Environment, Kafayat Lawal, said the facility would remain closed until investigations into the incident were completed and further directives issued.

Lawal disclosed on Tuesday that preliminary findings pointed to possible lapses in safety standards, although investigators were yet to establish the full circumstances surrounding Nuru’s death.

She said the government ordered the suspension of operations as a precautionary measure while the investigation continued.

The permanent secretary added that the state would not tolerate negligence capable of putting workers’ lives at risk, extending the government’s condolences to the deceased’s family and colleagues.

She assured the public that the incident would be thoroughly investigated and that appropriate sanctions would follow if the company was found to have breached applicable safety regulations.

Lawal also urged industrial operators across the state to strengthen workplace safety measures and comply strictly with relevant laws to prevent avoidable accidents.

The state government reiterated that workers’ safety remained a priority and that industrial activities must not come at the expense of human lives.
