Tinubu Celebrates Oba of Benin at 10th Coronation Anniversary, 73rd Birthday

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Ewuare II, on his 10th anniversary on the throne and 73rd birthday, describing the monarch as a custodian of Benin heritage and a symbol of cultural dignity.

Tinubu conveyed the felicitations in a statement issued by the State House on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, on behalf of himself, his wife and the Federal Government.

The President praised the traditional ruler for a decade of royal leadership, saying his reign had reflected a commitment to preserving the history, customs and traditions of the Benin people.

He said the anniversary represented an important milestone in the monarch’s stewardship, commending his efforts to uphold the dignity of the Benin traditional institution and inspire confidence among his people.

Tinubu also acknowledged what he described as the wisdom, courage, restraint and commitment to peace that had characterised Oba Ewuare II’s years on the throne.

According to the President, the monarch has remained a source of wisdom, a guardian of communal values and a rallying point for the aspirations of his people.

Tinubu particularly commended the Oba’s efforts towards the repatriation of stolen Benin artefacts, recognising his role in preserving and promoting one of Africa’s historic monarchies.

The President wished the monarch renewed strength, greater wisdom and sound health as he marked another year, expressing hope that his reign would record further achievements in cultural preservation and social development.

He also urged younger generations to cherish their heritage, expressing optimism that the monarch would continue to inspire them through his leadership and commitment to Benin traditions.

Oba Ewuare II ascended the Benin throne in 2016. His 10th coronation anniversary coincides with his 73rd birthday on October 20, 2026.

Tinubu concluded his tribute with the traditional Benin expression, “Oba gha t’o kpere. Ise!”
