Troops of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have neutralised scores of bandits during a major operation targeting the camp of notorious bandit leader, Gwaska Dan Karmi.

The operation, carried out on January 31, 2026, followed credible intelligence indicating that over 100 bandits had converged at the camp to plan coordinated attacks on surrounding communities and military logistics routes.

After sustained surveillance, ground troops, with air support from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle.

The criminals reportedly attempted to flank and encircle the advancing troops but were overpowered by the superior firepower and coordination of the Nigerian Army. While many of the bandits were neutralised, others escaped with gunshot wounds.

The camp was subsequently destroyed before troops tactically withdrew to secure locations.

The NAF has since commenced interdiction missions to track and intercept fleeing bandits, while ground forces continue to dominate the area.

Confirming the operation, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lt. Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, disclosed that some soldiers paid the supreme price during the encounter.

He also revealed that a combat enabler vehicle was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by the bandits, causing it to catch fire.

The Nigerian Army honoured the fallen soldiers for their bravery and sacrifice, reaffirming its resolve to dismantle bandit networks, disrupt their supply chains and safeguard communities across the North-West.

Military authorities noted that troops remain in high combat readiness as operations continue in the region.
