U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to attend at least one NBA Finals game in New York next week, where the hometown New York Knicks are facing the San Antonio Spurs in their first championship series appearance in nearly three decades.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he accepted an invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan and expects to be present at Madison Square Garden for one of the upcoming Finals games. The president indicated that he is considering attending Game 3 on June 8 and could also attend Game 4 on June 10.

“I’m going,” Trump said when asked about the invitation, describing himself as a longtime fan of the Knicks and praising the team’s performance in the opening game of the series.

If the visit takes place, it would mark the first time a sitting U.S. president has attended an NBA Finals game, according to league officials. The planned appearance adds another high-profile sporting event to Trump’s schedule, following previous appearances at major football, mixed martial arts, and tennis events.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver welcomed the prospect of the president attending the championship series, saying the league is prepared to implement the necessary security measures. Silver noted that sports can serve as a unifying force and said Trump’s attendance would further elevate the significance of the event.

The Knicks currently hold a 1-0 lead in the NBA Finals after defeating the Spurs 105-95 in Game 1. The series has generated significant excitement among fans, with Madison Square Garden preparing to host its first NBA Finals games since 1999.

Reports indicate that security preparations are already underway ahead of the president’s expected visit. Officials have not released specific details, but increased security protocols are anticipated due to the significance of the event and the presence of the U.S. president.

Trump, a native New Yorker, has maintained a long-standing connection to the Knicks and New York sports culture. His planned attendance comes as the franchise seeks its first NBA championship since 1973.
