The Senate has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Service Chiefs, and security agencies for their decisive leadership and coordinated efforts that led to the successful rescue of students and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The upper chamber also paid tribute to security personnel who lost their lives during the rescue operation, urging the Federal Government to ensure the prompt payment of all statutory death benefits, insurance claims, and other entitlements to the families of the fallen officers.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who recalled that on May 15, 2026, heavily armed terrorists attacked educational institutions in Oriire Local Government Area, abducting 39 students and seven teachers, leaving their families and the nation in deep distress.

Presenting the motion, Bamidele said the successful rescue was made possible through the courage, patriotism, and professionalism of personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police, who confronted the kidnappers in a high-risk operation.

He noted that the mission came at a heavy cost, with some security personnel making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The Senate Leader also lamented that one of the abducted teachers died while in captivity, describing the loss as tragic. However, he said the rescue of the remaining victims without further casualties was a significant achievement deserving of national recognition.

The Senate thereafter applauded the bravery and commitment of the security forces and reaffirmed its support for ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, kidnapping, and other forms of insecurity across the country.
