Shettima Heads to Angola for AU Summit, to Present Nigeria’s Position on African Conflicts

Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Luanda, Angola, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), where African leaders are expected to focus on strategies for resolving conflicts and strengthening peace across the continent.

Shettima’s participation places Nigeria at the centre of high-level continental discussions on conflict prevention, dispute resolution and long-term stability as African countries grapple with persistent security challenges.

The Vice President is expected to deliver President Tinubu’s address at the summit, presenting Nigeria’s position on the issues under consideration and reaffirming the country’s commitment to peacebuilding and stability in Africa.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Shettima departed Abuja with senior defence and security officials.

The summit will bring together African heads of state, government representatives and other key stakeholders to examine practical approaches to preventing conflicts, resolving disputes and sustaining peace across the continent.

Nigeria is expected to draw on its longstanding role in regional peacebuilding and conflict resolution as discussions centre on strengthening continental mechanisms for addressing security crises.

The meeting also provides an avenue for Nigeria to push for stronger collective responses to emerging and protracted conflicts while reinforcing the role of African-led mechanisms in addressing the continent’s security challenges.

Shettima’s participation comes as the African Union continues to seek more effective strategies for preventing conflicts before they escalate and improving the continent’s capacity to manage disputes and sustain post-conflict peace.

At the summit, Nigeria is expected to reiterate its support for stronger multilateral cooperation and coordinated continental action in addressing threats to peace and stability.

The Vice President will return to Nigeria after completing his engagements in Angola.
