SOMMIE MADUAGWU’S REMAINS TO BE LAID TO REST ON OCTOBER 18 IN ANAMBRA STATE
The family of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, affectionately known as Sommie, has announced arrangements for her burial following her tragic death on September 29, 2025. Sommie, a talented journalist and lawyer with Arise Television, lost her life after jumping from a three-storey building in Unique Estate, Katampe, Abuja, during an armed robbery attack.
A service of songs will precede her funeral on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 5:00 PM at Corpus Christi Cathedral on Kaduna Street, Port Harcourt. Her burial service is scheduled for Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Saint Theresa Catholic Church in Agulu, Anambra State, followed by interment at her father’s compound, Isiamaigbo Village.
Sommie, 29, was a UK-trained professional who returned to Nigeria with aspirations to engage in politics and champion women’s advancement. Her family recalls her as a former first runner-up in the Miss Tourism Nigeria pageant, dedicated to making a positive impact. “She was brilliant, passionate, and dedicated to justice and humanity,” her family stated in a heartfelt tribute.
Colleagues describe Sommie as warm, diligent, and eager to learn, praising her poise and clarity as a broadcast journalist covering legal, gender, and social justice issues for Arise TV. Her death has sparked public outcry, with many demanding justice and improved security.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command confirmed an ongoing investigation into the robbery incident. Sommie’s family requests attendees wear all black attire for the solemn ceremonies, inviting friends, colleagues, and well-wishers to honor her memory.
