Stray Bullet Tragedy: Outrage as 14-Year-Old Girl Killed in Maiduguri
Residents of Maiduguri have expressed growing concern following the tragic death of a 14-year-old girl who was struck by a stray bullet in the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital quarters.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend, reportedly happened while the teenager was engaged in routine household activities. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the victim was hit by a bullet from an unknown source, leading to her immediate death.
Although the exact origin of the गोली remains unclear, there were no reports of insurgent attacks at the time. However, unverified claims suggest that members of the Civilian Joint Task Force may have discharged firearms nearby during a social gathering, possibly as part of celebratory gunfire.
A resident familiar with the incident said the young girl lived with her parents within the hospital quarters and was caught in the line of fire without warning.
The incident has sparked renewed fears among residents, particularly given the fragile security situation in Borno State. Many have condemned the practice of celebratory gunfire, warning that it poses serious risks to innocent lives and can trigger panic in communities already affected by insurgency.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, calls are mounting for a thorough investigation to determine the source of the bullet and ensure accountability for the teenager’s death.
