Operation HADIN KAI has confirmed a deadly explosion at a mosque within Gamboru Market in Maiduguri on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. on December 24, 2025, as worshippers were observing evening prayers.

Preliminary findings indicate the explosion was caused by a suspected Boko Haram Terrorist suicide bomber who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians instantly. Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for HQ JTF (NE) OPHK, provided the details in a statement. He said troops, along with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, other security agencies, the Borno State Government, and NEMA, responded promptly to secure and cordon off the area.

Casualties were evacuated to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri. Uba stated that a total of 32 civilians sustained injuries. Regrettably, two of the injured were later confirmed dead at the hospital, bringing the total fatalities to four, while two others are in critical condition. The remaining injured are stable and receiving care.

Security forces have intensified surveillance and security measures in Maiduguri and surrounding areas. Uba advised the public to remain calm and security conscious, especially during the yuletide season. He urged citizens to be vigilant and look out for suspicious individuals, avoid crowded places, and maintain extra vigilance at religious places, particularly churches during this period. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest security post.

OPHK commiserates with the families of the deceased and assures the public of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
