An explosion inside a mosque at the Gamborun Market in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, killed several people on Tuesday evening. The blast occurred around 6PM while worshippers were gathered for prayers, triggering panic and chaos within the busy market area.

Eyewitnesses report the blast ripped through part of the mosque, killing some worshippers instantly and leaving several others with varying degrees of injuries. “Traders and residents were seen fleeing the scene as thick smoke billowed from the mosque,” one witness said, “while others attempted to assist victims before emergency responders arrived.”

Security operatives swiftly cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties and to allow for a preliminary assessment of the incident. The explosion has caused significant distress in the community, with details on the number of casualties still being ascertained by authorities.
