CONTROVERSIAL REFEREEING DECISIONS MAR FINAL OF 2024 WOMEN’S AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS

The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final between Nigeria and Morocco was marred by controversy over contentious refereeing decisions, particularly involving the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Despite a thrilling 3-2 comeback win for Nigeria, the match was overshadowed by disputed calls that left players, coaches, and fans questioning the officiating. The turning point came in the 63rd minute when Namibian referee Antsino Twanyanyukwa awarded a penalty to Nigeria after Moroccan defender Nouhaila Benzina was judged to have handled the ball inside the box. The decision was made after a VAR review, but many believed the ball had merely glanced Benzina’s torso. Nigerian player Esther Okoronkwo converted the penalty, sparking outrage among the Moroccan team and fans. Morocco also had a penalty claim rejected in the same half. A visible handball by Nigeria’s Oluwatosin Demehin led to a penalty being awarded, only to be overturned after an extended VAR consultation. Moroccan football analyst Sami El-Hamidi expressed his shock, saying, “If that’s not a handball, then what is? The technology should clarify the game, not cloud it.” The officiating crew, composed entirely of women, had been praised before the match for representing CAF’s push to empower female officials. However, the events of the final shifted the narrative. Sports columnist Leïla Zahidi said, “We celebrate progress, but not at the cost of fairness. This final deserved better officiating. Morocco was robbed.” Social media erupted with criticism of the officiating, with many calling for better refereeing in African football. One fan wrote, “African football deserves better. VAR should not be used to protect bad refereeing.” Another commentator, Monsif, said, “Today, the Moroccan women’s national team has faced the greatest injustice.” Despite the controversy, Nigeria celebrated their win, but the debate over the refereeing decisions is likely to continue.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on the Super Falcons players and technical crew following their historic victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The President made the announcement during a special reception held at the State House in Abuja to celebrate the team’s resilience and record-breaking achievement at the tournament. “You have shown that with determination and unity, we can overcome any challenge. You didn’t just win matches, you won hearts,” Tinubu said, praising the squad for “inspiring a new generation of Nigerian girls” with their resilience, unity, and sporting excellence. Each of the 24 players will receive a three-bedroom apartment at the Renewed Hope Estate in Abuja, alongside a cash reward of $100,000. Members of the technical and backroom staff were also recognised, each receiving $50,000 in appreciation for their contributions to the team’s unbeaten run in the tournament. The Super Falcons defeated hosts Morocco 3–2 in a dramatic final, securing Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title and cementing their dominance in African women’s football. The team’s victory marks a significant milestone, with the players expressing gratitude to the President for the recognition and encouragement.

FROM 2 GOALS DOWN TO 3-2 WINNING BY THE SUPER FALCONS AND LESSONS FOR A BELEAGUERED NATION

This moment should be viewed as a paradigm shift that was defiant, bold and brave. They demonstrated that teamwork, leadership is the difference between wild flowers growing the way they like and untamed flowers growing as bush. The Super Falcons winning will encourage the young generation to develop attitudes that are sensitive and not anti social. It is no longer about religion but about mindset attitude and behaviours towards achieving the aspirations of our country. The conversation from their winning delve into hope, dreams and vulnerabilities, the team showed the new way of seeing a Nigeria that is fully committed, unique and opened up the heart and mind of the young generation. The scene was reflective, gracious and greatly powerful while the broader implications of this feat are hard to ignore because it transcended initial defeat and transformed into enduring courage and sagacity. It showed that merit is matured into and not by legislation. The winning showed that merit is essential so is diversity and the cost of leaving women out is too high: economically, socially and morally. The list of the Super Falcons was dynamic and diverse with pomp and purpose and not just names but narratives. It clearly showed that nations can be strong individually but that does not indicate national strength. You can be brilliant but not intimidating, it is all a balancing process. It was a bold statement from the Super Falcons, we see them and we need to celebrate ourselves because the impact was not only loud but steady, consistent and deeply national. It further reinforced the fact that gender equality should no longer be a dream deferred in many sectors. The super Falcons victory showed that Nigerians are not waiting for permission anymore, they are already doing the work. The winners are building, healing, innovating and empowering. Why no country have a perfect system of government, the winning of the Supper Falcons showed that the nation must constantly construct a system that propel her citizens to a more perfect country towards better citizens and forge the greatest amount of good for the majority of Nigerians. The super Falcons is a reminder that countries develop on the premise of hardwork and reward. The team chose to be exceptional and they came with victory. This is mission X in a country of more than 200 million people that are not known to dominate any aspects of society speaks to collective responsibility and commitment to posterity more than it does anything else. The message from the team is that we are the smartest people on earth and they made it loudest. They have momentarily change the global perception that we are the receiving end for wrong perceptions for crimes that other nationals make big ends from. Finally, the women’s winning clearly shows that getting our arts together includes tackling more seriously the domestic challenges; slow growth, creeping insecurity holding the nation down. Size without strength will not suffice. Kudos to the Super Falcons AVM (RTD) AKUGBE IYAMUCONSULTANT ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYST.
