GOVERNOR DIRI URGES IJAW YOUTHS TO CELEBRATE BORO WITH HONOUR AND INTEGRITY

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has admonished the Ijaw nation, particularly the youths, to reflect on and imbibe the ideals of discipline, selflessness, and justice that the late Major Isaac Boro stood for. Diri gave the admonition on Friday at this year’s Boro Day celebration/wreath laying ceremony at the Heroes Park in Yenagoa. Chief Press Secretary Daniel Alabrah reports that Governor Diri urged Ijaw youths to show respect to constituted authority, leaders, and their elders. “Let us celebrate our hero with sobriety, honour and integrity,” Diri said. “Was Isaac Adaka Boro a criminal? Was he a selfish man? Did he sacrifice and fight for his people? These are questions we must ask ourselves when we embark on the journey of celebrating a man like Boro.” Diri emphasized that Boro sacrificed his life fighting the injustice to the Ijaw nation and advised the youths to celebrate the ethnic nationality’s hero with honour and integrity. The governor particularly charged youths to abhor crime and cultism, and called on the leadership of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) and Ijaw National Congress (INC) to work closely with government to put an end to the menace. “The recent resurgence of cultism has to stop,” Diri stressed. “The IYC and INC must work with government to put an end to cultism.” In his remarks, President of the INC, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, advised that in celebrating the 57th Boro anniversary, the Ijaws must not forget that their late hero stood for justice, peace, and truth. Okaba commended the Diri administration for improving the welfare of the Ijaw people through its strategic intervention projects and support to the ethnic group’s socio-cultural bodies. President of the IYC, Comrade Jonathan Lokpobiri, said the issues that Boro fought for were still prevalent in the Niger Delta even though the region had made some progress. Lokpobiri noted that Boro’s legacies will remain evergreen in the minds of the Ijaw people. The event featured the laying of wreaths at the Boro tomb by Diri, Okaba, King Bubaraye Dakolo, Lokpobiri, Boro’s children – Felix and Esther – and the state council of Nigerian Legions led by Elder Okubokekeme Ogele.

Diri said, “His passing is a painful loss not just to Bayelsa, but to Nigeria. Captain Olubolade was a man of integrity, humility and vision.” The governor recalled that the state celebrated Olubolade’s 70th birthday in Yenagoa last year, and he was full of life at the event. Diri said Olubolade identified with the state through the years and was one of the key supporters of his administration. “He never distanced himself from the state. He was always a phone call away and gave us his full support,” Diri added. The state cabinet observed a minute’s silence in honour of the late former administrator. PDP’S GEORGE TURNAH ACCUSES GOVERNOR DIRI’S SUPPORTERS OF PLOT TO ASSASSINATE HIM

The South-South Zonal Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), George Turnah, has alleged that supporters of Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, are plotting to assassinate him and his family. In a letter dated April 7, 2025, and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Turnah claimed his life is under threat due to a growing rift with Governor Diri. The rift, according to Turnah, stems from his political alliance with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. Turnah, a known loyalist of Wike, announced plans to launch the Bayelsa chapter of the “NEW Associates,” a pro-Tinubu grassroots movement, along with a major rally set for April 12. Turnah accused Governor Diri of fueling animosity against him, citing remarks allegedly made at recent meetings of the State Security and Elders Council, where he was labeled “an enemy of the state and the Ijaw nation” for organizing a rally in support of President Tinubu and Wike. “I am writing to bring to your urgent attention a serious matter concerning my safety and well-being following an ideological disagreement with Governor Diri,” Turnah wrote. “Since aligning with the FCT Minister, I have received threats to my life from the Governor’s loyalists.” Turnah also referenced a Facebook post by Jonah Paebi, a known supporter of Governor Diri, who allegedly wrote that Turnah’s political move was a “death trap” and warned the public to “watch how George Turnah will soon be a thing of the past.” Due to the alleged threats, Turnah revealed that he and his family have fled their home and are currently in hiding at an undisclosed hotel. “The situation is also taking a toll on the mental health of my wife and children. Therefore, I urgently appeal for your intervention and protection for myself and my family,” Turnah appealed. This controversy adds a complex layer to Turnah’s public profile, who in 2022, was convicted and sentenced to four years in prison on corruption charges related to his tenure as Special Assistant to the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dan Abia. However, Turnah paid a fine in lieu of serving the sentence.

GOVERNOR DIRI INAUGURATES SIX NEW SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN YENAGOA, VOWS LEGACIES WILL SPEAK FOR HIM

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has inaugurated six newly constructed secondary schools in Yenagoa, the state capital, declaring that his administration’s legacy projects will speak for him after his tenure. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, the governor emphasized his commitment to addressing infrastructure deficits in the education sector. Diri stated that upon assuming office, he identified a critical shortage of school facilities and promptly approved the construction of new schools across Yenagoa. The newly inaugurated schools are located in Biogbolo, Yenezue-Epie, Ovom, Ekeki, Akenfa, and Igbogene communities, with a combined student population of 4,628. Speaking during the joint inauguration ceremony at Government Secondary School, Biogbolo, Diri said his administration prioritizes human capacity development and will continue to invest in programs that instill the right values and skills in children. He urged students to maximize the facilities, noting that many of his peers lacked such opportunities yet excelled in various professions. “For us, it is an opportunity to serve, and we believe these projects will speak for us. The schools we have built, the children we have trained, and the empowerment initiatives for youths and women are the legacies that will endure,” Diri said. He listed other achievements, including road infrastructure, a new stadium, a secretariat complex, and gas turbines for electricity generation. According to Alabrah, Diri disclosed that the approval for new schools was prompted by overcrowding in existing institutions like Bishop Dimeari Grammar School and St. Jude’s Girls Secondary School, which fell short of the United Nations’ recommended student-teacher ratio. “Today, we are inaugurating six of such schools, bringing the total to eight in Yenagoa, including those previously built in Ogbogoro and Swali,” he added. The governor provided a breakdown of student enrollment in the new schools: Biogbolo (1,000), Igbogene (361), Ekeki (450), Ovom (883), Akenfa (1,237), and Yenezue-Epie (679). He also highlighted his approval of N16 billion for school renovations and the signing of a law increasing teachers’ retirement age from 60 to 65 years. Diri warned truant teachers to either recommit to their duties or resign, stressing that the government would not tolerate absenteeism. Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, praised the governor for transforming the state’s education landscape by expanding access beyond the two prominent schools in Yenagoa. Meanwhile, the paramount ruler of Biogbolo, His Royal Highness Frank Amos, speaking on behalf of other benefiting communities, lauded Diri for the initiative, noting that Yenezue-Epie was getting its first secondary school. The event was attended by the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, former deputy governor and Chairman of the Bayelsa Elders Council, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah, top government officials, and traditional rulers.

GOVERNOR DIRI WARNS AGAINST PLOT TO DISRUPT PEACE IN BAYELSA

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has raised an alarm over a plot to disrupt the peace in the state, urging security commanders, elders, traditional rulers, and youths to remain vigilant. In In a statement signed by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Daniel Alabrah, on Thursday, March 27, 2025, the governor warned that the state government would not tolerate any actions capable of undermining the prevailing tranquility in Bayelsa. Alabrah stated that Diri issued the warning on Thursday during separate meetings with the Bayelsa Elders Council and the 37th session of the state security council. He expressed concerns over a planned mega rally and inauguration of a group loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, describing it as a potential trigger for avoidable crisis. The governor also accused a suspended member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), George Turnah, of attempting to create factions within the party in the state. Diri emphasized that holding such an event amid heightened ethnic tensions in Rivers State could escalate into conflict in Bayelsa. He noted that the alarm became necessary following Wike’s alleged threat to instigate crisis in PDP-governed states. “Any attempt to import the Rivers State political crisis into Bayelsa will be resisted,” Diri stated. He urged security agencies to remain alert while calling on parents and traditional rulers to dissuade youths from being used by troublemakers. According to Alabrah the governor insisted that the peaceful nature of the Ijaw people should not be mistaken for weakness, vowing that Bayelsa, as the homeland of all Ijaws, would not tolerate unrest orchestrated by faceless groups. “This is not Rivers State. Bayelsa is the cradle of every Ijaw man. Being peaceful is not cowardice. We are very courageous and can stand up for the truth at all times,” Diri declared. He further warned that no public facility in the state would be used for unauthorized activities without government approval. During the meeting with the elders, Diri assured them of prudent management of the state’s resources. Addressing the ongoing electricity blackout, he attributed it to vandalized towers in Rivers State but promised collaboration with relevant agencies to restore power. He also revealed plans to employ 1,000 Bayelsans into the civil service, acknowledging the high number of applicants received. Diri explained that the earlier teachers’ recruitment exercise was canceled due to irregularities, adding that a new committee led by his Deputy Chief of Staff had been set up to oversee a fresh process. The Chairman of the Bayelsa Elders Council, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd), commended Diri for his administration’s infrastructure development efforts. The meeting was attended by prominent leaders, including King Alfred Diete-Spiff, former Military Governor of Rivers State and Amayanabo of Twon-Brass, and King Bubaraye Dakolo, Chairman of the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council.
