GOV OKPEBHOLO MEETS EDO APC LEADERS, ASSURES OF MORE INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has assured the people of Edo State of his administration’s determination to continue working towards more developmental strides. This assurance was made during a victory dinner held at the New Festival Hall of Government House in Benin City on Monday night, celebrating his victory at the election petition tribunal. Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, in a statement, quoted Governor Okpebholo as saying that with the tribunal’s affirmation of his victory, Edo people will see more positive developments as his administration has adopted a practical governance style. “The tribunal ruling shows we won the governorship election clearly as the three judges unanimously gave APC victory. Edo is marching forward, and we will continue to do our best to uplift the well-being of our people,” Okpebholo stated. Itua noted that the Governor appreciated God, party leaders, and the electorate for the victory. Okpebholo thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for standing by the party despite tremendous pressure from certain quarters. “I thank all party faithful and leaders, All Progressives Congress (APC) State Working Committee (SWC) as they stood by us to ensure victory,” he said. Fred Itua further quoted Okpebholo as saying, “My duty is very simple. First, to work for Edo people and secure our land. With these steps, Edo State will move forward.” Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District and former Governor of Edo State, congratulated Okpebholo on the victory. “When non-believers went to court to challenge God’s proclamation, the court reaffirmed the decision of Edo people,” Oshiomhole said. Fred Itua also mentioned that APC Chairman in Edo State, Jaret Tenebe, thanked the people for their votes, assuring them that the Governor will deliver on his election promises. Other dignitaries present included Deputy Governor Hon. Dennis Idahosa, Secretary to the State Government Musa Ikhilor, and former Deputy Governors Peter Obadan, Pius Odubu, and Comrade Phillip Shaibu. Fred Itua was also present at the event. The Governor’s commitment to development was reiterated by party leaders, with Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe (retd) praising Okpebholo for making “Esan Agenda” become “Edo Agenda” and bringing dividends of democracy to the people.

EDO STATE TO SUSTAIN ARMY RECRUITMENT QUOTA UTILIZATION

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has pledged to continue sensitizing citizens on utilizing the state’s recruitment quota in the Nigerian Army to enhance national security. The governor made this commitment while receiving a delegation from the Chief of Army Staff, led by Brigadier General Wiito Nzidee, Director of Supply and Transport Services at Army Headquarters. Okpebholo emphasized the importance of involving Edo youths in the recruitment process to bolster the state’s contribution to national security. “The State will work with the Brigade Commander to set up a team to take the message to the 18 Local Government Areas of Edo State. The team will ensure utilization of State’s quota in the Nigerian Army,” he stated. This initiative aims to address Edo’s lagging recruitment numbers, with only 194 registrations out of 2,000 allocated slots for the 89 Regular Recruit intake, compared to other states like Kaduna (2,393), Adamawa (1,701), Bauchi (1,136), and Plateau (1,400). The Army delegation’s visit seeks to create awareness among youths about available opportunities in the Nigerian Army. Commander 4 Brigade, Brigadier General Ebenezer Oduyebo, highlighted that joining the Army not only contributes to national security but also provides employment opportunities. Okpebholo’s administration plans to collaborate with the Brigade Commander to disseminate information across all local government areas, promoting the recruitment drive. This effort underscores the state’s commitment to leveraging its quota and empowering its youth.

EDO PDP: A SICK PARTY ON LIFE SUPPORT, GASPING FOR RELEVANCE

The Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been described as a party on life support, gasping for relevance. In a statement, the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, noted that the party has become a shadow of its former self, factionalized, internally battered, and directionless. Itua stated that the PDP’s latest antics, rather than winning them public sympathy, only reinforce the obvious: Edo PDP is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), gasping for air, and rather than battling for survival, they are wasting their dwindling oxygen on unproductive tantrums. “The PDP is not just a sick party on life support—it is a party suffering from terminal political irrelevance,” Itua said. The PDP’s obsession with baseless accusations extends to their claim that the Okpebholo administration is “inducing” members of the Edo State House of Assembly with ₦200 million each to defect to the APC. Itua described this as a falsehood and a tragic reflection of PDP’s own corrupt mind-set. “In their time, they could only buy loyalty with cash because they lacked any real governance achievements to inspire followership,” he said. Itua also criticized the PDP’s fabricated outrage over recent security incidents in Ovia and Okpekpe. “While the Okpebholo administration swiftly mobilized security forces and initiated immediate responses to curb the threats, PDP shamelessly tried to spin the situation to cover up their own failures,” he said. The Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor noted that Governor Monday Okpebholo is not just leading a government; he is leading a rescue mission to recover Edo from the abyss PDP pushed it into. “Under PDP, Edo was seen as a State trapped in the hands of political Pharaohs, suffocating under bad governance. But Edo people have now declared they will never go back to Egypt,” Itua said. Fred Itua emphasized that the PDP should abandon its ICU-induced rants and start doing the hard work of genuine opposition—one that offers constructive alternatives rather than desperate, uncoordinated attacks. “Until then, their cries will remain what they are: the last gasps of a party in political coma, struggling to find its place in a State that has outgrown its failures,” he said. Itua concluded by saying that Governor Okpebholo welcomes criticism, but it should be based on facts and logic, not bitterness and political frustration. “The PDP’s rants are not about governance; they are about wounded egos and lost political privileges,” he said.

EDO GOVERNOR CONDEMNS KILLINGS, ORDERS DEPLOYMENT OF MORE SECURITY AGENTS

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has condemned the recent attacks on seven farming communities in Ovia-South West Local Government Area, which resulted in the loss of 22 lives and widespread destruction of property. Chief Press Secretary to Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, stated that the Governor also denounced the killing of two farmers, Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello, in Okpekpe community, Etsako East Local Government Area, by suspected herdsmen. The devastating attack on seven farming communities in Ovia South West, which left 22 people dead, and several others injured were reportedly carried out by militants. The militants also destroyed buildings and farm produce worth millions of naira. “We will not tolerate any form of violence or lawlessness in Edo State,” Governor Okpebholo said in a statement. “We will work tirelessly to ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are brought to justice, and we will do everything in our power to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.” Fred Itua noted that Governor Okpebholo has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to the affected areas and the provision of support to the affected communities. “We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Edo State residents,” Governor Okpebholo said. “We will work closely with the security agencies, traditional leaders, and community members to achieve this goal.” The Governor has also called on the people of Edo State to remain calm and to cooperate with the security agencies as they work to address the crisis. “We urge everyone to remain calm and to go about their normal business,” Governor Okpebholo said. “We are doing everything possible to ensure that the situation is brought under control.” Fred Itua stated that the Governor is committed to ensuring justice is served and peace is restored in the affected areas.

ASUE IGHODALO’S PURSUIT OF A POLITICAL MIRAGE

By Fred Itua A pie in the sky is often used to describe an illusion—an enticing dream that, despite its allure, remains beyond reach. It represents aspirations that are detached from reality, fantasies that refuse to materialize no matter how fervently pursued. The ambition to govern Edo State is, in itself, a noble one. Every qualified individual has the right to aspire to public office. However, ambition must be matched with prudence, and political aspirations should be pursued with a sense of realism. When the electorate has spoken through the ballot, and the mandate has been decisively bestowed, the logical question becomes: at what point does one accept reality and move on? There is a well-known African proverb that says, if you do not know where you are going, at least remember where you are coming from. Since his defeat in the September 21, 2024, Edo State governorship election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, has remained locked in a desperate and seemingly futile attempt to upend the verdict of the people. His persistent legal maneuvers appear to be nothing more than an attempt to cling to a fading hope, seeking every possible avenue to overturn the legitimate mandate freely given to Senator Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), whom many now hail as the Akpako-messiah. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Senator Okpebholo the winner of the election, having secured 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo, who garnered 247,655 votes. In a democracy, elections are won and lost at the polling units, and when the people have spoken, the expectation is that candidates, especially those who claim to be democrats, would respect the will of the electorate. Unwilling to accept the outcome, Ighodalo and the PDP swiftly took their grievances to the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal, challenging the results from 765 polling units out of the 4,519 polling units in the state. However, the tribunal’s proceedings have been anything but smooth, largely due to PDP’s apparent lack of a solid case. The tribunal, initially set up in Benin, was relocated to Abuja due to security concerns, but the change in venue did little to alter the PDP’s approach. Instead of diligently presenting its arguments, the party resorted to deliberate delay tactics, seemingly intent on dragging out the process rather than proving its claims. At the peak of these antics, PDP’s legal team, led by Adetunji Oyeyipo (SAN), sought adjournments on the flimsy excuse that their witnesses had experienced “travel disruptions.” “My Lords, this is the reason we are unable to present them today. We urge your Lordships to give us another date. We undertake that on the next date, we will bring as many witnesses as may be convenient for the tribunal.” This statement, however, did not sit well with the tribunal’s chairman, Justice Wilfred Kpochi, who expressed clear displeasure over the PDP’s time-wasting tactics. The tribunal firmly ruled that the party should proceed with its case immediately, as it had been adequately informed beforehand. Even more telling is the fact that, despite initially planning to present a robust lineup of witnesses, the PDP abruptly closed its case on Monday, February 3, after calling only 19 witnesses—a sharp contrast to the aggressive posturing it had displayed earlier. At the same time, the party made unsubstantiated claims that the APC was intimidating its witnesses, yet it failed to present any credible evidence to support these allegations. These inconsistencies raise the question: was the PDP truly prepared for this legal battle, or was it simply engaging in a futile exercise meant to create unnecessary political tensions? Now that the PDP has closed its case against the APC and Governor Okpebholo, one can only hope that the party will allow INEC and the APC to present their defense without further obstruction. Rather than continuing on this path of endless litigation, it would be far more beneficial for Ighodalo and the PDP to reflect on the reasons for their defeat, realign their political strategies, and focus on constructive opposition—one that strengthens democracy rather than weakens it. Ultimately, elections are not won in courtrooms but at the polling booths, and the people of Edo State have spoken. It is time to respect their choice. EDO STATE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION PETITION TRIBUNAL DISMISSES SDP’S PETITION

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed the petition filed by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) challenging the election of Senator Monday Okpebholo. The three-man Tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, struck out the case after SDP’s counsel, Jackson Ehiabhi, informed the court that the party no longer wished to proceed. Ehiabhi cited a directive from the party’s National Secretariat as the reason for the withdrawal. No further details were provided. The dismissal brings an end to the SDP’s challenge to Okpebholo’s election.

POLICE ARREST SUSPECT FOR SPREADING FALSE INFORMATION AGAINST FORCE

The Nigeria Police Force has taken decisive action to curb the spread of fake news, disinformation, and incitement capable of widening the trust gap between the Police and members of the public. In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed that on December 8, 2024, operatives of the Force apprehended one Destiny Ekhorutomuen, a 38-year-old suspect, in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State. The Nigeria Police Force strongly warns against the misuse of social media and other communication platforms to propagate fake news or incite disorder. Adejobi emphasized that such acts are criminal and punishable under the law. Citizens are urged to exercise caution and responsibility in their use of information, as the collective peace and unity of the nation depend on it. Adejobi reassured the public of the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to upholding law and order. He noted that the Force will continue to identify and prosecute individuals or groups engaging in activities that threaten Nigeria’s peace and security.
