FCT POLICE ORDER ARREST OF WOMAN OVER ALLEGED ABUSE OF TEENAGE MAID

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has ordered the immediate arrest of a woman alleged to have abused a 14-year-old domestic worker, Bashariya, from Zamfara State. A disturbing video showing Bashariya’s severe injuries went viral, sparking widespread condemnation on social media and calls for justice. FCT Commissioner of Police, Adewale Ajao, condemned the abuse, saying, “No child should suffer like this. We are treating this case with the urgency it deserves. The suspect must be brought to book.” According to preliminary reports, Bashariya was allegedly starved and subjected to physical abuse in the home where she worked. The full extent of her injuries is still being assessed by medical personnel. Ajao urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of abuse to authorities, emphasizing that children in domestic labor are particularly vulnerable. “This case is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of children in domestic labor. We will not tolerate such cruelty,” he added. Child rights advocates have welcomed the swift response but are calling for broader reforms to prevent similar incidents. Amina Yusuf, a child protection activist based in Abuja, noted that “this is not an isolated case. There are thousands of Bashariyas across Nigeria. It’s time for stronger laws and real enforcement.” The FCT Police Command has reiterated its commitment to justice and is encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward.

TWO WATER TREATMENT PLANTS UNDERGOING MAJOR REHABILITATION CAUSES PARTIAL WATER SUPPLY DISRUPTION IN FCT

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has explained that the partial disruption of water supply in Abuja city centre and some satellite towns is due to major rehabilitation works on two of the four water treatment plants operated by the FCT Water Board. Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, in a statement, said water supply to residents will be rationed for a period of two weeks as only two water treatment plants will be in use, while the other two are undergoing rehabilitation. “Residents are therefore urged to store enough water to cater for their needs during this period as supply will be rationed,” Olayinka said. The rehabilitation works, which have reached an advanced stage on Phases 1 and 2, involve replacing and reinstalling electro-mechanical equipment, necessitating a total shutdown of the two interconnected plants. Although Phases 3 and 4 water treatment plants are operational, they cannot meet the full demand of the populace, resulting in partial disruptions in supply. Lere Olayinka assured that SCC Nigeria Limited is working 24/7 to conclude the works before the scheduled time. To mitigate the effects of the partial shutdown during the Sallah celebration, the two plants under rehabilitation will be temporarily activated to supply water during the festive period. The FCT Water Board has developed a rationing timetable that alternates between Lines 1 and 2 of the distribution network to minimize the adverse effects on residents. Lere Olayinka appealed to residents to bear with the FCTA, assuring that the rehabilitation will be completed before two weeks and will ensure better service delivery. The FCT Water Board operates four water treatment plants with a combined capacity of 30,000 cubic meters per hour, divided into Phases 1 to 4. The rehabilitation is critical to restoring the plants to optimal performance, as they are currently operating below installed capacity.

The Nigerian Senate has passed the N1.78 trillion 2025 Appropriation Bill for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for second reading. The bill, transmitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeks to authorize the issuance of N1.78 trillion from the FCT’s statutory revenue fund to fund key infrastructure and service delivery across the territory. Senator Adetokunbo Abiru called the budget “developmental” but asked for clarity on funding sources for capital spending. Senator Victor Umeh praised visible improvements under FCT Minister Nyesom Wike but urged the government to extend development to surrounding areas to address high land costs. The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on FCT for further legislative action, with a report expected back within one week. Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the committee to expedite its review.

PRESIDENT TINUBU CITES FCT’S REMOVAL FROM TREASURY SINGLE ACCOUNT AS CATALYST FOR DEVELOPMENT BOOST

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that the decision to exempt the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) was aimed at accelerating infrastructure development and fostering resident involvement in governance. The President made the remarks during a Sallah homage by FCT residents at the Presidential Villa on Sunday, emphasizing that bureaucratic hurdles under the TSA had hindered progress in the capital city. The explanation was contained in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, on Saturday. Tinubu disclosed that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had advocated for the policy shift to enable faster execution of projects, leading to visible improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, and security. “I remember the day the FCT Minister approached me, requesting exemption from the TSA to enhance efficiency. After reviewing his plans, we approved the change, and the results have been transformative,” Onanuga quoted the President as saying. Onanuga noted that Tinubu highlighted completed projects, including the Vice President’s official residence, rehabilitation of healthcare centers, and upgrades to school facilities. The President commended Wike for restructuring the FCT public service to empower civil servants and drive leadership accountability. “We celebrate the innovative ideas brought to the FCT, which have revived abandoned projects and expanded rural development,” Tinubu added. The statement further revealed the President’s call for Nigerians to prioritize competence over ethnic or religious considerations in leadership. “Security is improving, hunger is reducing, and unity is strengthening. We seek results, not magic—someone who genuinely cares,” Tinubu asserted. Onanuga emphasized the President’s praise for Wike’s role in promoting national diversity, describing him as a symbol of Nigeria’s collective potential. Onanuga also reported that Wike, leading a delegation of lawmakers, traditional rulers, and civil society groups, thanked Tinubu for hosting the historic visit and reaffirmed his commitment to delivering landmark projects. Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and other senior officials attended the event. Tinubu concluded by urging tolerance and patriotism, drawing lessons from Ramadan. “May the virtues of this sacred period guide our actions and strengthen our resolve,” the President stated.

FCT MINISTER REVOKES 4,794 LAND TITLES OVER NON-PAYMENT OF GROUND RENT

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has approved the revocation of 4,794 land titles due to non-payment of Ground Rent for over 40 years. This decision affects property owners in the Central Area, Garki I and II, Wuse I and II, Asokoro, Maitama, and Guzape districts. In a statement, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister, Lere Olayinka, explained that the FCTA made numerous publications in national newspapers and announcements on broadcast media since 2023, calling on defaulters to pay up all outstanding bills and ground rents. However, these efforts yielded little response, as several allottees failed to pay. Olayinka emphasized that payment of Ground Rent on landed properties in the FCT is founded on extant legislation. The affected districts include Central Area District (Cadastral Zone A00), Garki I (Cadastral Zone A01), Wuse I (Cadastral Zone A02), Garki II (Cadastral Zone A03), Asokoro (Cadastral Zone A04), Maitama (Cadastral Zone A05), Maitama (Cadastral Zone A06), Wuse II (Cadastral Zone A07), Wuse II (Cadastral Zone A08), and Guzape (Cadastral Zone A09). As of the end of 2024, a total of N6,967,980,119 is owed as Ground Rent by 8,375 property owners. Lere Olayinka stated that 4,794 land titles are in default of Ground rent payment for 10 years and above, which is in contravention of the terms and conditions of grant of the Rights of Occupancy. Consequently, the titles of the properties in default of payment of Ground Rent for 10 years and above have been revoked forthwith. Olayinka added that a 21-day grace period is given to title holders who are in default of payment of Ground Rent for between one and ten years, after which the affected titles will be revoked. This move is aimed at enforcing compliance with the payment of Ground Rent in the FCT.
