NCC CRACKS DOWN ON TELECOM INFRASTRUCTURE VANDALISM, PROTECTS CRITICAL NATIONAL ASSETS

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its commitment to protecting telecom infrastructure, following President Bola Tinubu’s Executive Order designating telecom facilities as critical national infrastructure. The NCC has launched a public awareness campaign to educate the public on the importance of safeguarding these facilities, which include fibre cables and other components. Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, Head of Public Affairs at the NCC, expressed deep concern over the destruction of telecom assets, citing frequent attacks resulting in cutting of cables, stolen generators and fuel, and removal of critical components. “The NCC has gone ahead with plans to operationalize President Tinubu’s Executive Order, which criminalises the damage or tampering of critical national infrastructure, including telecom facilities,” she said. The NCC has identified three major challenges affecting telecom operations: vandalism and theft, site access denial, and road construction-related damages. Ukoha advised users to monitor data usage, disable background updates, understand their data plans, change hotspot passwords regularly, and avoid high-resolution downloads and auto-play settings to prevent data depletion. The NCC is collaborating with stakeholders to reduce accidental damage to telecom infrastructure during construction and working with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to educate the public on the importance of protecting telecom facilities. “We need better coordination as nationwide construction activities increase,” Ukoha emphasized. NUJ FCT Chairman Comrade Grace Ike commended the NCC’s leadership and expressed the Union’s desire to build a strategic partnership with the NCC on training, public awareness, affordable internet access for journalists, and promoting transparency. The partnership aims to support the NCC’s efforts in protecting critical national assets and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery nationwide.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa praised the initiative, describing it as a critical step toward safeguarding journalists’ health. Represented by Director of Medical Services Surgeon Commodore Momoh Jimoh Salihu, the CDS said, “It is actually a laudable event and I want to say kudos to the NUJ FCT and the Nizamiye Hospital for organizing and conducting this medical outreach for journalists. This effort will improve the well-being and productivity of journalists in Abuja and help them stay focused on their job.” NUJ FCT Chairman Comrade Grace Ike expressed gratitude to Nizamiye Hospital for deploying a team of specialists, including a general surgeon, internals, cardiologist, nephrologist, ophthalmologist, and general practitioners. “We will always make sure our members are healthy. They go out to the field every time and most times they barely have time to check on themselves,” she said. The outreach is part of NUJ FCT’s wider plan to raise health awareness and provide free medical support to journalists. Comrade Ike noted that the results of the check-ups would help guide their efforts to secure health insurance for members. “This initiative demonstrates the union’s commitment to supporting journalists’ well-being,” she added. “It is our desire to make sure that we get health insurance for our members. The outcome of today’s outreach will better guide us.” Comrade Ike promised that this wouldn’t be the last time, saying the union remains committed to looking after its members. “This will not be the last. We will continue to do this. Thank you to Nizamiye Hospital for taking up this challenge.” Doctors from Nizamiye Hospital carried out various health checks, including heart health, bones and joints, eyes, and dental care. The hospital’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Mohammed Abubakar, said, “Our aim was to conduct medical screening for journalists in the FCT. The aim of the medical outreach is to prevent diseases. We are known to give humanitarian aids and this for us is a partnership with the NUJ FCT.” The medical outreach identified several health issues, including high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels, hernia, and hemorrhage. The hospital will follow up with participants who require further treatment and management. Dr. Nurullo Sadokov, Deputy Medical Director of Nizamiye Hospital, stated that the medical outreach was part of the hospital’s corporate social responsibility. “I hope this screening will help journalists to identify and prevent diseases and sicknesses.” Comrade Grace Ike expressed her joy and satisfaction with the exercise, stating that it aligns with her campaign focus on prioritizing welfare and inclusivity for journalists. She emphasized that the nature of the job often leaves the issue of healthcare neglected and revealed that efforts are ongoing to obtain health insurance for media members of the union under the National Health Insurance Scheme. “We will always make sure our members are healthy. They go out to the field every time and most times they barely have time to go for medical check-ups.” The partnership between NUJ FCT and Nizamiye Hospital aims to promote better health and higher productivity among journalists in Abuja. The exercise was well-attended, with Comrade Ike thanking Nizamiye Hospital for bringing their team of specialists to check on NUJ members. “I am happy that members turned out en masse for this outreach. For me, I am happy that the team of medical doctors from Nizamiye hospital are here to check our members.”

NUJ FCT COUNCIL CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, HAILS ACHIEVEMENTS OF WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has joined the global movement in recognizing the resilience, achievements, and contributions of women across all sectors on International Women’s Day 2025. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” highlights the progress made in gender equality and the need for continued efforts to break barriers and create opportunities for women. The NUJ FCT Council acknowledged the growing representation of women in decision-making roles and reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for female professionals. The Council’s commitment to gender inclusivity is further reflected in the historic election of Grace Ike as the first female Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council after 41 years. Ike’s emergence is a significant milestone, demonstrating the evolving role of women in journalism and leadership. Her victory serves as an inspiration to women within and beyond the media industry, reinforcing the message that leadership is about vision and ability, not gender. In her statement, Ike emphasized that International Women’s Day should be more than just a symbolic occasion. “It’s time to move beyond lip-service and stop playing to the gallery. A woman who chooses to abandon her fellow women in an electoral contest, aligning herself with men instead, is not embodying the true essence of womanhood,” she said. Ike also stressed the importance of women’s participation in elections, not only as voters but as leaders, candidates, and agents of change. “Their participation can reshape the political landscape and challenge the status quo. However, when women choose to betray their own kind for personal gain or political advantage, they undermine the solidarity and progress that are crucial for societal transformation.” The NUJ FCT Council called on stakeholders to continue supporting and empowering women, ensuring they have access to platforms where they can contribute meaningfully to societal development. “As more women take up leadership roles, the impact is evident in journalism, governance, and various other fields, where their contributions are shaping policies, narratives, and progress.” On this International Women’s Day, the NUJ FCT Council stands in solidarity with women worldwide, celebrating their achievements and advocating for a future where leadership knows no gender.
