A brazen attack on the life of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by unidentified hoodlums wielding cutlasses and firearms has been condemned by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA). The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, in Obeiba-Ihima area, Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State. National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement, accused some dark forces who are scared of the truth of being behind the evil plot to assassinate Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. Onwubiko said, “We are calling for forensic investigations and the arrest of the attackers so they face the full weight of the law.” Onwubiko is demanding that the security agencies take all necessary measures to protect the senator. The attackers, numbering at least three, vandalized the building, including shattering window panes, around 1:00 a.m. A team of security operatives from Okehi Division swiftly mobilized to the scene, and preliminary investigations have commenced. Onwubiko called on the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services to ensure that no harm happens to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. “We urge all the aggrieved persons and her political rivals to follow the due process of the law and not resort to self-help measures,” Onwubiko emphasized. The motive behind the attack remains unknown as investigations continue, and the police have not made any arrests. HURIWA has expressed solidarity with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, stressing that her life must be safeguarded at all costs.

GUNMEN ATTACK SENATOR NATASHA AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN’S FAMILY HOME IN KOGI

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s family home in Obeiba-Ihima, Kogi State, was attacked by gunmen on Tuesday, April 15. The attackers, who mistakenly believed the Senator was present, vandalized windows in her grandfather’s house. Fortunately, security operatives swiftly responded and repelled the attackers. According to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, the incident occurred when her younger brother took contractors to inspect locations for upcoming projects in her senatorial district. “The unknown gunmen assumed I was the one in town and attacked my family house that night. Thankfully, the civil defence team and community members responded promptly and chased them off. A report was made at the police area command, and no one was hurt,” she said. The Senator’s Spokesman, Arogbonlo Israel, condemned the attack, describing it as a “calculated assault” in direct response to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s courageous stance against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, whom she accused of sexual harassment. “We urge the Inspector General of Police to immediately reinstate her security details,” Israel added. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has called on the public to remain calm and support her pursuit of justice. “My dedication to speaking truth and representing my constituents should not be met with violence and intimidation,” she emphasized. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and the police have begun preliminary investigations.

INEC REJECTS PETITION SEEKING RECALL OF KOGI CENTRAL SENATOR

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the rejection of a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District. According to INEC, the petition failed to meet the requirements outlined in Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. Section 69(a) stipulates that for a recall process to be valid, at least half of the registered voters in the senator’s constituency must sign the petition. INEC’s decision suggests that the petition fell short of this threshold, rendering the recall process legally unviable at this stage. The commission’s statement, posted on its official X handle, did not provide further details on the specific shortcomings of the petition. However, it reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic processes. This development brings temporary relief to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, whose tenure has been marked by political controversies and power struggles in Kogi politics. Supporters and opponents of the senator are now awaiting further political manoeuvres following INEC’s decision.

INEC CONFIRMS RECEIPT OF PETITIONER DETAILS, NOTIFIES SENATOR IN KOGI CENTRAL RECALL PROCESS

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed receiving the contact details of representatives leading the recall petition of the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commission disclosed that the petitioners’ address, telephone numbers, and email were provided in a letter dated 26th March 2025 and addressed to the INEC Chairman. National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, stated that the Senator has been formally notified of the petition’s receipt, in line with Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024. “A letter has been written to notify the Senator sought to be recalled about the receipt of the petition and delivered to her official address,” Olumekun said. He added that the Senate’s presiding officer had also been copied, while the notice was published on INEC’s website. Olumekun explained that the next phase involves scrutinizing the list of signatories to verify if the petition meets the requirement of being endorsed by over 50% of registered voters in the constituency. “This will be done in the coming days,” he said, noting that the outcome would be made public and determine the Commission’s subsequent actions. Reiterating INEC’s commitment to transparency, Olumekun assured Nigerians that the process would remain open and fair. “We once again reassure Nigerians that the process will be open and transparent,” he emphasized. The update follows INEC’s initial statement on Tuesday, which acknowledged the petition but noted the absence of petitioners’ contact details at the time. The latest development moves the recall process forward, pending verification of the submitted signatures.

INEC’S REJECTION OF FLAWED RECALL PETITION AGAINST SENATOR NATASHA AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN HAILED AS VICTORY FOR DEMOCRACY

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has drawn widespread praise for its decision to dismiss a defective petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District. The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), Comrade James Ezema, and the National Secretary of the Coalition of National Civil Society Organisations (CNCSOs), Alhaji Ali Abacha, jointly commended the electoral body in a statement issued on Wednesday. Ezema and Abacha described INEC’s action as a clear demonstration of its renewed dedication to fairness, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law. “INEC’s decision to throw out the procedurally defective petition for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is a testament to its renewed commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that the electoral process remains credible and inclusive,” the statement read. The coalition emphasized INEC’s crucial role as an impartial regulator in Nigeria’s electoral system, urging the Commission to sustain its current trajectory of integrity. “For Nigerian democracy to survive and thrive beyond the 2027 general elections, INEC must continue to discharge its duties without fear or favor, ensuring that all actions are guided by the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and its own regulations,” Ezema and Abacha stated. They also highlighted the importance of protecting citizens’ democratic rights, adding, “We remain resolute in our commitment to ensuring that every citizen’s voice is heard and respected.” The coalition called on political parties, civil society organizations, and the media to support INEC’s efforts, warning against any attempts to compromise the Commission’s independence. In closing, Ezema and Abacha reaffirmed their readiness to collaborate with INEC and other stakeholders to promote transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral process. “We stand united in our resolve to defend democracy and ensure that the will of the people prevails at all times,” the statement concluded.

DELTA WOMEN GIVE AKPABIO 14-DAY ULTIMATUM TO APOLOGIZE OVER SEXUAL HARASSMENT SAGA

Delta State women, under the platform of the Virtuous Women of Delta (VWD), have issued a 14-day ultimatum to Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to apologize over the Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan sexual harassment saga rocking the Senate. The women threatened to storm the National Assembly complex in protest if Akpabio fails to tender an unreserved apology within the stipulated timeframe. According to the Coordinator of VWD, Deaconess Eguolo Oghenekevwe, the women have watched how the Senate president has dragged the reputation of Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan through the mud, an act she declared as traditionally sacrilegious and attracts heavy sanctions. Oghenekevwe stated, “The fact that he walked out our wife from a public place alone, is enough for us to match to the National Assembly naked.” The women took umbrage with Akpabio’s previous comments, which mentioned a nightclub, despite knowing that Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan is married to a Delta man. Oghenekevwe said, “Sen. Akpabio had once used words that are unprintable in the first place, mentioning nightclub when he knows Sen. Natasha is married to a full-fledged Delta man.” The VWD coordinator emphasized that the women are politely asking the Senate president to apologize or face their wrath within the next 14 days. “Sen. Akpabio is from our geopolitical zone, so he knows that our traditions, and culture cannot be swept under the carpet,” Oghenekevwe said.

NATASHA VS AKPABIO: THE NEED FOR SEN. AKPABIO TO RESIGN AND ALLOW FOR A FORENSIC AND UNFETTERED INVESTIGATION INTO THE SEXUAL HARASSMENT ALLEGATION

Friday Lines (50) WithDr Abubakar Alkali 01/03/2025 In July 2020, a certain Joy Nunieh the self-styled ‘Port Harcourt girl’ who served as acting MD of the interim management committee (IMC), Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) granted a tell-all interview to Arise TV where she made startling and wild sexual harassment allegations against the then minister Niger Delta affairs Godswill Akpabio. During the interview, Ms Nunieh admitted that she slapped Godswill Akpabio whom she claimed, made sexual advances to her or betterstill had invited her to ‘go physical’ during a supposed ‘meeting’ in his guest house. In the interview, Ms Nunieh stated that Godswill Akpabio invited her to his guest house in Apo where he promised to use (or misuse) his position as the minister, Niger Delta affairs to upgrade her from an acting position to substantive MD of the NDDC in return for sexual favours. That’s very easy, he said. Of course it is very easy because all he needed to do was raise a ‘memo’ and get Tunde Sabiu to take it to Buhari who will sign it promptly. No checks required. Reading the memo before signing it is a waste of time according to the administrative template of Buhari. Up till this moment, Sen Akpabio has not denied Ms Nunieh’s sexual harassment allegation nor sued her to court for defamation of character. The rest is history. From the Joy Nunieh interview with Arise TV aired on 13th July 2020 onwards, it will dawn on any objective mind that it is only a matter of when not if before vintage Akpabio is exposed further by another woman as he walks blindfolded on his way to getting his hard-earned career crippled or even destroyed by women. From that perspective, it was long time coming and wasn’t surprising when Sen Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, made a startling expose over an alleged sexual harassment by Sen. Akpabio. Curiuosly, on the same Arise TV where Joy Nunieh made the first documented allegation of sexual harassment against Akpabio, Sen. Natasha revealed a series of Sen Akpabio’s inappropriate behaviour towards her and even alleged that she is being victimised by the senate President for not ‘giving in’ to his sexual advances. Some of the romantic cum sexual advances Natasha alleged that Akpabio made towards her include: ‘Since you like this room, I will create space so that we can have quality time together’ ‘I am the chief presiding officer of the senate and I can make you happier’ ‘You will enjoy if you take care of me’ ‘I can visualise a night club and arrange a party for all of us to enjoy’ ‘Come to my hotel room for a meeting’ ‘You will like it’ It should be noted that senator Natasha didn’t have the time to reveal several other direct toasts made to her by Akpabio and such advances she may have received so far from other randy senators in the upper chamber during her interview with Arise TV. Clearly, journalists Rufai and Ayo acting on orders from the chairman Nduka Obaigbena, attempted to restrict Natasha from a tell-all to a ‘reveal-some’ interview. To summarise the sexual harassment allegation against Akpabio, Natasha likened her ordeal at the senate to a female student who kept failing a course because she refused to sleep with the lecturer. These are damning allegations indeed especially for a President of the senate who is the nation’s No. 3. They cannot be swept under the carpet even if to save Nigeria’s democracy because if the senate implodes, it will mean the nation’s democracy is over. The legislature is the hub of any democracy. Natasha’s allegations must be taken seriously. Yes, senator Akpabio must resign as President of the senate. He is not above the law and has brought the senate into disrepute even though Natasha’s accusations remain allegations until proven otherwise. Akpabio should be a role model for the youths and not the other way round. What kind of inspiration and impression is he giving to the youths by his scandal and more scandal involving women? Clearly, the man Akpabio has an eye for beautiful sexy women which can be a natural trait but he must also keep himself in check and away from every beautiful sexy woman he comes across. Are women just a piece of meat or what? Akpabio should remember that he is a top grade public office holder – the No.3 in Nigeria. Only heaven knows how many women have fallen prey of Sen Akpabio’s virus-like appetite for women. How many more women are coming out for further revelations now that Natasha and Joy Nunieh in the first instance have opened the floodgates? Can more allegations happen in Nigeria where people are afraid to say their mind for fear of victimisation especially when it involves highly placed government officials? Where one can get killed simply for saying the truth? Time shall tell. The need for Akpabio to resign as senate President is moreso when juxtaposed with the need for Natasha to get a fair hearing. The right to fair hearing is encapsulated in decision 36(1) of the constitution Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended). Normally in Nigeria’s political cycles, any woman that dares to participate in politics and political activities to compete with the men is seen as an easy prey. It is like ‘she brought herself’ This is wrong especially when the person is Akpabio who was once a governor, minister and even attempted a shot at being the President of Nigeria. Are we saying that women should not be part of politics in Nigeria? Can’t we manage just 4 women in the senate without a scandal? How many women are Presidents of their country today including Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico? The Natasha/Akpabio scandal is more worrisome when juxtaposed with the fact that Akpabio is said to be a good friend to Natasha’s husband. The fact that she is married should have set some boundaries for Akpabio. The legislature is the hub of democracy and everything

SENATOR AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN FILES N100BN DEFAMATION LAWSUIT AGAINST SENATE PRESIDENT AKPABIO

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Senior Legislative Aide to the Senate President, Mfon Patrick, for alleged defamation. The suit, marked CV/737/25, was filed before the Federal Capital Territory High Court on February 25, 2025. According to the lawsuit, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that defamatory statements were made by the Senate President and published by his aide on Facebook. The post, titled “Is the Local Content Committee of the Senate Natasha’s Birthright?” included a statement suggesting that Akpoti-Uduaghan believed being a lawmaker was only about “pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the chambers.” Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lawyer, Victor Giwa, argued that the statement was defamatory, provocative, and disparaging, lowering his client’s dignity in the eyes of her colleagues and the public. Giwa stated, “A DECLARATION that the words… used and written by the third defendant at the prompting of the first and second defendants, is defamatory and intended to cause public opprobrium and disaffection toward the claimant.” Akpoti-Uduaghan also urged the court to restrain the defendants and their associates from making further defamatory statements against her on any platform. She asked the court to order the defendants to pay her N100 billion in general damages and N300 million as litigation costs.

COALITION OF CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS CONDEMNS SENATOR NATASHA AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN’S ACTIONS, COMMENDS SENATE PRESIDENT FOR INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP

The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity and Justice has condemned Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s disruptive tendencies, particularly her recent violation of the Nigerian Senate Rules. In a press statement made available to journalists in Abuja, the group’s national coordinator, Comrade James Okoronkwo, stated that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, as a rookie senator, has been fairly treated, having been given the chairmanship of two Senate committees. According to the group, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s “recent vituperations over sitting arrangement is un-parliamentary, disrespectful, crude and selfish and most importantly breaches the Nigerian Senate Standing Orders.” The group commended Senate President, His Excellency Barr Goodwill Akpabio, for his inclusive and transparent leadership, noting that he has been fair and equitable to the female gender and should be lauded, not vilified. The group’s statement highlights the importance of upholding the Nigerian Senate Rules and maintaining a respectful and parliamentary demeanor. By condemning Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions and commending Senate President Akpabio’s leadership, the Coalition of Civil Society Groups aims to promote good governance, equity, and justice in Nigeria’s legislative processes.
