TEAR GAS DISPERSES SENATOR AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN’S SUPPORTERS AT NATIONAL ASSEMBLY GATE

Security operatives clashed with supporters of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan at the National Assembly gate in Abuja following the expiration of her six-month suspension. The Kogi Central lawmaker arrived with a large crowd, including women and youths from Kogi State, but was reportedly prevented from entering the complex.

Tear gas was deployed to control the gathering, injuring several attendees who were later hospitalized. Eyewitnesses described the scene as tense, highlighting heavy security deployment that disrupted a planned peaceful welcome. “It was supposed to be a historic return for her, but it turned into a nightmare,” a National Assembly staff member remarked.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan condemned the treatment of her supporters, emphasizing respect for democratic values. “These are innocent Nigerians who came in peace; they deserve better,” she told journalists. Emergency responders evacuated injured individuals, sparking concerns among staff and lawmakers about the incident’s handling.

The senator’s office had been reinstated, raising expectations of a smooth return. Civil society groups and political commentators now call for Senate leadership to investigate and prevent future confrontations, criticizing the clash as a blemish on Nigeria’s democratic image.
