Tinubu Mourns Veteran Actor Taiwo Hassan, ‘Ogogo’, Hails His Legacy in Nollywood

 President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of veteran Nollywood actor, filmmaker and screenwriter, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, following his death.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on August 24, 2026, the President described the late actor as a distinguished artiste whose decades-long career contributed significantly to the growth of Yoruba-language theatre and Nigerian cinema.

Tinubu said Ogogo’s distinctive acting style, powerful screen presence and commitment to his craft enabled him to entertain generations of Nigerians while promoting Yoruba culture and the country’s diverse cultural heritage.

The President also highlighted the late actor’s mentorship and influence on younger artistes, saying his body of work would remain an important part of Nigeria’s cultural history.

Tinubu, on behalf of the Federal Government, extended his condolences to Hassan’s family, colleagues, friends and millions of admirers.

He prayed that Almighty Allah would grant the late actor eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear the loss.

The President also urged members of the creative industry and Nigerians to honour Ogogo’s memory by preserving and building on the cultural values and artistic traditions to which he devoted his life.

From Mechanic to Nollywood Icon

Before gaining fame in the entertainment industry, Ogogo worked as a mechanic with the Ogun State Water Corporation for about 13 years.

He began his acting career in 1981 while combining the profession with his mechanic job.

In 1994, he left his employment to pursue acting full-time, eventually establishing himself as one of the prominent figures in Yoruba-language cinema.

President Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of the late actor’s soul.
