Tinubu Receives New NUPENG Leadership, Conferred as Grand Patron

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday received the newly elected leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he was formally conferred with the title of Grand Patron of the union.

The delegation was led by NUPENG National President, Comrade Salimon Akanni Oladiti, who presented the honour to the President during the visit.

Oladiti emerged as NUPENG president earlier this year, succeeding Williams Akporeha. The union’s new national officers were elected for a four-year term.

The meeting brought together President Tinubu, Oladiti and members of the newly elected NUPENG executive, alongside senior government officials, including Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri.

The engagement comes as the government continues to focus on reforms and developments in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, one of the country’s most important sources of revenue and foreign exchange.

NUPENG, which represents workers across the petroleum industry, has continued to engage the government and other stakeholders on issues affecting workers, the downstream sector and the wider petroleum industry.

Oladiti has previously pledged that his administration would strengthen engagement with government and employers while prioritising the welfare and rights of union members.

The President’s meeting with the new NUPENG leadership is expected to further strengthen relations between the Federal Government and organised labour in the petroleum sector.
