Former governorship candidate, Tonye Cole, has withdrawn from the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections.

Cole announced his withdrawal in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying the decision was taken in the interest of party unity, reconciliation, and respect for the supremacy of the APC following extensive consultations with stakeholders.

According to him, the move was driven by patriotism and a commitment to the stability and success of both the party and Rivers State.

“I have taken the decision, in the overriding interest of party unity, peace, and collective progress, to respect the supremacy of the party and withdraw from the forthcoming primaries,” he stated.

The APC chieftain described himself as a committed democrat who believes in strong institutions and pledged to support whoever eventually emerges as the party’s governorship candidate.

Cole said his decision was not made lightly, noting that it followed deep reflection and careful consideration of the political situation within the party.

He expressed appreciation to party supporters, youths, women groups, elders, and other loyalists across Rivers State who stood by him throughout the political process.

The former governorship aspirant also urged his supporters to remain peaceful and cooperate fully with the leadership of the APC as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

According to him, party members must remain united in order to secure victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC, and its candidates in future elections.

Cole’s withdrawal comes amid growing political realignments and heightened tensions surrounding APC primaries in several states ahead of the next electoral cycle.
