The Rivers State House of Assembly has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to immediately transmit the list of commissioner-nominees to the legislature for screening and confirmation. This demand was made during the Assembly’s first plenary session after a six-month suspension following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in the state.

The session, held at the Conference Hall of the Legislative Quarters along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, marked the Assembly’s formal return to legislative business. Lawmakers commended President Tinubu for lifting the emergency rule and restoring democratic governance in Rivers State.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to “upholding the peace accord reached with key stakeholders” and collaborating with the executive to stabilize the state. “The Assembly was committed to upholding the peace accord reached with key stakeholders and working with the executive to stabilize the state,” Amaewhule stated.

The motion, sponsored by nine members including House Leader Major Jack and Deputy Leader Linda Somiari-Stewart, was unanimously adopted. Jack highlighted the need for a new financial plan reflecting Rivers people’s aspirations, as the legislature wasn’t involved in the budget implemented under emergency rule. The Assembly also seeks to review contracts awarded and funds spent during the emergency period.

Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Nma Odu, and lawmakers are expected to fully resume constitutional duties following Tinubu’s Wednesday directive lifting the emergency rule declared on March 18, 2025.
