The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that the African Democratic Congress was denied access to the Eagle Square for its planned national convention.

Speaking after inspecting ongoing projects in Abuja, Wike described the allegation as “baseless,” insisting that no formal application had been submitted for the use of the facility.

The controversy followed concerns raised by the party, with its publicity sub-committee chairman, Kola Ologbondiyan, stating that the ADC had yet to secure a venue less than 24 hours before the scheduled convention.

Reacting, Wike said: “Who denied them? I am not aware of any such development. If it is the African Democratic Congress, such claims are their usual attempt to gain public sympathy.”

He explained that access to Eagle Square requires due process, including a formal request through the Abuja Investments Company Ltd and payment of the necessary fees.

The minister also clarified that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome is not under the FCT Administration but the National Sports Commission, noting that previous users of both venues complied with laid-down procedures.

“We do not deny anyone access if the rules are followed,” he added.

Project Updates

On infrastructure, Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of ongoing projects across the FCT, assuring that key road works would be completed by May 15, while streetlight installations would be finalised before the end of May.

At Gaduwa, he directed the installation of protective mesh to safeguard road corridors, while also noting progress on streetlight projects.

At Wassa, the minister disclosed plans to relocate artisans and spare parts dealers currently operating at Apo Mechanic Village along the Outer Southern Expressway corridor to a new, better-equipped facility.

According to him, the relocation is aimed at improving working conditions and fulfilling long-standing commitments to the informal sector.

Wike attributed the steady execution of projects in the FCT to effective collaboration with contractors and the prompt payment of contractual obligations.
