Mounting outrage over xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa has triggered calls for the suspension of the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), with the Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) urging MultiChoice to halt the event.

In a statement released on Sunday, the group said proceeding with the awards ceremony; scheduled for May 9 at Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos, would be insensitive given the reported violence against Nigerians abroad.

FOSAD condemned what it described as a disturbing wave of attacks targeting Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, characterising the incidents as inhumane and a violation of human dignity and African unity.

The group referenced widely circulated videos on social media showing alleged cases of abuse, including the public assault of Nigerian women, which it described as deeply troubling and unacceptable.

Beyond physical attacks, FOSAD also raised concerns about reports of systemic discrimination, alleging that Nigerians in South Africa are increasingly denied access to essential services such as healthcare and education.

According to the group, proceeding with a high-profile entertainment event like the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards under such circumstances would undermine the seriousness of the situation.

“Going ahead with the AMVCA at this time would send the wrong signal and appear to trivialise the suffering of victims,” the statement said.

FOSAD also pointed to Nigeria’s historical support for South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle, including advocacy linked to the eventual release of Nelson Mandela, describing the current situation as a betrayal of that shared history.

The group warned that failure to address the crisis could heighten tensions within Nigeria, cautioning about possible backlash if concerns are ignored.

FOSAD further urged Nigerian authorities to intensify diplomatic efforts to protect citizens abroad and ensure perpetrators of xenophobic violence are held accountable.

The statement was signed by FOSAD President, Dr Stephen Nwala, and Secretary-General, Dr Uzor Ngoladi.
