At least eight people have been confirmed dead and dozens injured after a fire tore through a shopping centre in Iran, authorities say.

The blaze broke out on Tuesday at the Arghavan shopping centre in Andisheh town, located west of Tehran. Emergency officials reported that between 36 and 40 people sustained injuries, with several receiving treatment at the scene while others were taken to hospitals.

Footage aired by Iranian media showed thick black smoke billowing from the multi-storey complex as firefighters battled to contain the flames. Rescue teams were also deployed to search for anyone trapped inside the building.

Preliminary reports indicate that the fire spread rapidly, possibly due to flammable materials used in the building’s exterior cladding. However, the exact cause of the incident remains unknown, and authorities have launched an investigation.

Officials have stated there is currently no evidence linking the fire to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, despite heightened security concerns in recent weeks.

The tragedy adds to concerns over building safety standards, as deadly fires have periodically occurred in Iran due to outdated infrastructure and weak enforcement of safety regulations.
