Tension erupted at the National Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Thursday as a leadership crisis within the party escalated over control of the party headquarters.

The crisis followed the arrival of Shehu Gabam, whose faction was reportedly recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after a recent court ruling.

Gabam arrived at the party secretariat around noon alongside police officers in an attempt to resume office but was initially denied entry by private security personnel stationed at the gate.

Sources said the SDP chieftain remained inside his vehicle for more than an hour while security operatives attempted to resolve the standoff.

During the impasse, members of the rival faction led by Abubakar Gombe were reportedly holding a meeting inside the secretariat.

The situation later degenerated as supporters loyal to Gabam forced open the gate and gained access to the premises amid heightened tension.

Police officers deployed to the scene subsequently fired tear gas to disperse suspected political thugs allegedly attempting to obstruct enforcement of the court-backed leadership decision.

The development marks the latest twist in the ongoing leadership battle within the SDP, raising concerns over deepening divisions ahead of future political activities within the party.
