INEC Publishes Tinubu, Atiku, Obi’s Credentials for Public Scrutiny Ahead of 2027 Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the personal particulars and supporting documents submitted by presidential candidates contesting the January 16, 2027 presidential election, officially opening the period for public scrutiny of their qualifications.

The publication, carried out in line with the Commission’s revised timetable for the 2027 General Election and the provisions of the Electoral Act, includes the EC9 forms and accompanying documents submitted by candidates during the nomination process.

Among those whose documents have been made available are President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peter Gregory Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside other presidential contenders and their respective running mates.

According to INEC, the published documents contain each candidate’s personal information, educational qualifications, employment history, occupation, sworn declarations and certificates submitted as part of the nomination requirements.

The documents have been displayed at INEC offices across the country, allowing members of the public to examine the credentials presented by the candidates before the election.

The publication also signals the beginning of the statutory period during which eligible Nigerians may challenge the authenticity of any information submitted by candidates.

Under Section 33 of the Electoral Act, any individual who has reasonable grounds to believe that information contained in a candidate’s affidavit or supporting documents is false may institute legal proceedings before a competent court.

Electoral observers say the provision is intended to strengthen transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral process by allowing citizens to question the eligibility of candidates where credible evidence exists.

The release of candidates’ credentials is one of the key milestones in INEC’s preparations for the 2027 general election.

The Commission has maintained that the exercise is a legal requirement designed to promote openness in the nomination process and ensure that all candidates meet the constitutional qualifications for the offices they seek.

Political parties, civil society organisations and members of the public are expected to study the published documents as the countdown to the 2027 presidential election continues.
