An alleged attempt by suspected political thugs to vandalise decorations at the venue of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja has sparked fresh concerns over political intimidation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday evening, October 25, at JD Event Centre, Abuja, where event organisers were making preparations for the party’s NEC meeting scheduled for Monday, October 26, 2026.

According to the organisers, unidentified men arrived at the venue and allegedly attempted to tear down and destroy decorative materials installed ahead of the meeting. The organisers reportedly resisted the attempt, forcing the men to leave.

The suspected attackers were also said to have threatened to return and disrupt the proceedings, although their identities and motives remained unclear.

Reacting to the development, Dr Prince, a United States-based medical professional and member of the committee, as well as the Northern Integrity Professionals (NIP), condemned the alleged incident, describing it as unacceptable in a democratic society.

“This is totally uncalled for. We are in a democratic setting, and everyone must be allowed to exercise their civic rights without intimidation,” he said.

He stressed that citizens and political organisations must be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights without fear of harassment or attempts to silence them.

Dr Prince also called for greater public vigilance in protecting democratic institutions, arguing that citizens and international observers have a role to play in demanding accountability and respect for constitutional principles.

He further questioned whether public officials were living up to the oaths they swore upon assuming office, stressing that such commitments should serve as a continuing standard for evaluating the exercise of public authority rather than mere ceremonial declarations.

The Northern Integrity Professionals, a civic network that promotes integrity, public service and responsible civic participation, advocates collaboration among professionals, volunteers and community-minded citizens to advance the common good.

The reported incident comes amid previous allegations of attacks and intimidation involving NDC members and supporters in different parts of the country.

In September, the party reportedly alleged that suspected state-sponsored thugs disrupted a grassroots meeting in Nkanu West, Enugu State.

Separately, an attack on the convoy of an NDC candidate for the Ebonyi State House of Assembly on October 22 reportedly left one person dead and three others injured, according to police.

NDC supporters were also reportedly attacked at Enugu airport in October.

However, no evidence has been established linking these separate incidents to Sunday’s alleged disturbance at the Abuja venue.

The identities of those allegedly involved in the latest incident, the extent of any damage and whether the matter was formally reported to the police remained unclear at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, attention has shifted to the NDC’s programme for Monday, October 26, 2026, as the party prepares for a series of activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s third NEC meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with the presentation of its statement of account by the National Treasurer among the expected activities.

The programme also includes the commissioning of the party’s new national secretariat in Jabi, Abuja, at 2 p.m., followed by the inauguration of its National Campaign Council and the presentation of Certificates of Return to candidates at 5 p.m.

The events are expected to attract attention as political parties intensify preparations for the next general elections.

The reported incident has renewed calls for peaceful political participation, respect for constitutional rights and the protection of registered political parties from unlawful intimidation.

Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged disturbance and determine whether any offences were committed.
