Trump Confirms Ongoing Iran Talks After Renewed Military Clashes
U.S. President Donald Trump has said Washington is continuing negotiations with Iran despite a fresh exchange of fire between the two countries that has heightened tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Trump stated that diplomatic contacts between the United States and Iran were still ongoing even after renewed military confrontations involving U.S. naval forces and Iranian-linked attacks in the region.
The latest escalation reportedly involved attacks near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, where U.S. officials said American destroyers came under fire from Iranian forces. Washington later responded with strikes targeting Iranian military positions and surveillance facilities, according to multiple reports.
Despite the hostilities, Trump insisted negotiations had not collapsed, suggesting both sides were still seeking a possible agreement aimed at reducing tensions and preventing a wider regional conflict.
Iranian officials, however, have repeatedly disputed parts of Trump’s claims regarding the status and progress of negotiations. Tehran has maintained that indirect contacts may exist through mediators but has denied agreeing to several key U.S. demands, including restrictions tied to its nuclear program and regional security activities.
The renewed violence has raised concerns among global powers over the stability of the Gulf region, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. Rising tensions have also fueled volatility in global energy markets and increased fears of broader military confrontation.
Regional mediators, including Pakistan and other diplomatic actors, are reportedly continuing efforts to broker a temporary ceasefire and revive negotiations between both sides.
While Trump has expressed optimism that a deal remains possible, analysts say the latest military exchanges could complicate already fragile diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
