The United Kingdom has deployed Royal Navy destroyer HMS Dragon to the Middle East as part of preparations for a possible multinational mission aimed at protecting commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

British defence officials said the deployment is part of contingency planning being coordinated with France and other allies amid growing tensions in the Gulf region and concerns over disruptions to global trade routes.

According to the UK Ministry of Defence, HMS Dragon will be “pre-positioned” in the region ahead of any future coalition-led operation intended to secure safe passage for commercial vessels through the strategic waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, carrying a significant portion of global crude oil and gas exports. Rising regional tensions and recent confrontations involving Iranian-linked vessels have heightened fears of possible disruptions to international shipping.

Reports indicated that France has also moved naval assets, including the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, closer to the region as European powers consider broader maritime security measures.

HMS Dragon had earlier been stationed in the eastern Mediterranean, where it was involved in regional security operations and protection of British interests following heightened military activity involving Iran.

British officials stressed that the planned mission would be defensive in nature and focused on restoring confidence in international shipping if regional conditions permit.
