Former PPA Chairman, Peter Ameh, Joins NDC, Seeks Strong Democratic Alternative for Nigeria
Former National Chairman of the Progressives Peoples Alliance, Peter Ameh, has formally announced his decision to join the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), citing worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and growing hopelessness in the country.
Ameh, who was also the presidential candidate of the PPA in the 2019 general election and a former Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), said his decision was driven by the need to help build a stronger democratic alternative capable of restoring hope and confidence among Nigerians.
In a statement announcing his defection, the former political party chairman said Nigeria is currently facing serious socio-economic challenges, including unemployment, insecurity, and uncertainty about the future.
“Our fellow citizens are struggling with economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and uncertainty about the future with no foreseeable end in sight,” he said.
According to him, patriotic Nigerians and progressive political forces must unite to rescue the country from what he described as “the abyss of hopelessness.”
Ameh said his political journey has always been guided by integrity, inclusion, internal democracy, and service to the people, stressing that politics must focus on improving the lives of the majority.
He explained that joining the NDC would allow him continue contributing to democratic development, national cohesion, and people-oriented governance.
The former presidential candidate also expressed support for leadership built on accountability, prudence, compassion, and transparency, adding that Nigeria needs leaders committed to improving the welfare of ordinary citizens.
He further stated that the NDC provides a platform for constructive engagement and credible leadership capable of strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national unity.
Ameh also referenced the political ideals associated with Peter Obi, saying many Nigerians desire leadership that prioritises protection, accountability, and responsible governance.
“I look forward to working with the leadership and members of the party toward strengthening democracy and advancing the collective interest of the Nigerian people,” he stated.
His defection adds to the growing political realignments and coalition-building efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
