The lawmaker representing Ideato North and South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, has called on opposition political parties to end what he described as “childish” internal conflicts and focus on building a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ugochinyere specifically urged leaders and members of the African Democratic Congress, Nigeria Democratic Congress, and the Labour Party to stop public exchanges of insults and internal attacks, warning that such divisions were weakening the opposition’s credibility.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the lawmaker described the ongoing clashes among opposition figures as unnecessary and counterproductive to democratic progress.

“This is not the time for unnecessary fights and media attacks against one another. Nigerians expect the opposition to provide direction, hope, and credible alternatives,” he said.

He argued that opposition politics should be centered on addressing national challenges such as insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and governance failures, rather than internal disputes driven by personal ambition and ego.

Ugochinyere stressed that unity, dialogue, and strategic collaboration were essential if opposition parties hoped to remain relevant and competitive in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

“The people are watching. What Nigerians want to see is maturity, unity, and a common purpose,” he stated.

He further warned that continued fragmentation within opposition ranks could undermine efforts to present a strong alternative to the ruling establishment, adding that political movements thrive on cohesion rather than rivalry.

The lawmaker’s remarks come amid growing political realignments and increasing tensions among opposition parties as they reposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
